FN FAL.

Mine was custom built by Rich Saunders of CGW on a DSA Type 1 receiver with a minty STG-58 parts kit. The barrel was cut to 18" and crowned and I went for several upgrades- lightweight lower, VOW A2-style sights, stripper clip top cover and several other lightweight parts. .308 power in a package just as manageable as an AK... With plentiful $4 pre-ban mags it's the perfect rifle, as far as I'm concerned.

Remington is winning in the polls so far.

I have a new rifle on the way, and after a Timney adjustable trigger, rings, mounts, and new scope we will see how she does. I ordered a Winchester Laredo 7mm Mag. The listing reads that the gun is layed in an HS Precision stock from the factory. We will see how it does.

Depending on the intended use:
Varmint: Bushmaster V-Match w/Weaver Grand Slam 3.5-10
Game: Remington 700 synthetic in .243 with Leupold Vari X II 3-9
Duty: Colt AR-15 M4 A3 with Trijicon Reflex and M-6 laser.
Trunk: Bushmaster Ar-15 M4 A2
Plinking: Thompson Center Classic .22 lr

Remington 700P in .223.

Favorite combat rifle? M14 or M1A. Just read "Black Hawk Down" to find out the advantages to this... M16A2 and other similar rifles fire the 5.56 (small round) at a high rate of speed, so in close fighting like in Iraq it just blows thrugh the target without making much damage. Sgt. Howe explains this in "Black Hawk Down". Randy Shugart carried an M14 (he was a Sniper for Delta, posthumosely awarded Medal of Honor) because when you really needed to kick some, the 7.62mm bullet would do the job.

I'm not an expert, but I do have a couple .223's. The way I understand it, it depends on what you're shooting at.

If you're talking "soft" (human) targets, the .223 actually fragments and dumps all its energy into the target at close range (from a carbine or rifle). It DOESN'T over-penetrate like a .308.

"Hard" targets, and further targets are different, as are bullets from extremely short (<16") barrels.
