Your favourite EDC pattern

#77. All day long.

I tend to gravitate toward this type for my primary pocket knife -- large, single blades. Not exactly a favorite pattern, but definitely a preferred type.

My EDC is a Buck 301 or 371 stockman, along with a 4 blade scout/camp/utility, and a Buck 110. Some days I add a canoe to these three.

I tend to favor the whittler patterns, especially any with a split spring. Great main for most tasks (food, slicing an apple, or spending time in the woods). The other side has two small blades, being a pen and a coping in my case on the two GEC #38s I have. I keep the coping as a scalpel, and the pen for boxes, public and the like. I get as much utility out of this one knife as I have ever been able to with a larger folder and a peanut combo (just don't tell Jackknife... he might pull my cult membership!!). As it uses a split spring setup, it still carries nice and slim too!

The knife that sees the most pocket is my Case Sodbuster Jr. in yellow delrin. I have some fancier knives (and more expensive) that I really like, but the Sodbuster is my favorite. The blade has developed a lovely mottled blue and golden color patina from slicing my lunchtime apples. It looks great with the pale yellow handle. For around $20 it was a great investment.

I have a few knives that fall into the favorite EDC category. Not just one.

Let's start with the one or two that I have handy pretty much all the time.

GEC Wharncliffe trapper in smooth ivory bone:

Then there is the avatar mini copperhead. I can't say how much I like this pattern... In this photo, you can tell it gets used...

and a treasured knife that I came to own a while back - GEC 66 jack in rotten banana bone:

For me, the main attribute of traditionals is the increased utility of multi-blade knives, with different cutting profiles. The only time I carry a single blade is if I also have an SAK on me. So my favorite EDC patterns are stockmen and two-blade jacks. Strangely, I never got into whittlers; I prefer the larger sheepfoot of a stockman to the small coping blade on a whittler. The combo of a clip and sheepfoot really works for me; here are some of my faves.

Thank you all for your replies. I have ordered the Queen rail splitter. Coping and pen secondary blades with a clip main. Perfect.

I think you made a great choice. I have a Queen made Tuna Valley Railsplitter, and it is one of my favorites (I have too many. Hehe).

Excellent choice. I'm sure you will love it.

If you don't mind my asking, which handle material did you choose?

My favorite pattern is the Wharncliffe Trapper. One blade with a straight edge and one with a little belly seems to get it done for me. Something like this.

Hey there Railsplitter, it seems as though your handle tells us which is your preferred pattern ;)
I got the amber bone one. I was aiming for a walnut handled model but I found my choices were severely limited. Being Australian it's very hard to find a dealer here that stocks all the variations and I've never had much luck getting knives through customs.

Sounds good. I'm sure you will like the blade arrangement as well as Queen's D2 steel.

I have a nice little rotation going but my GEC 48 Trapper seems to get the most pocket time. Which is funny to me; I don't need two full sized blades, it's a pretty big knife and it's heavy for it's size. Yet, I think it might be my favorite.
