Your favourite sharpener

Treated myself to a DMT Aligner system to get to know how to sharpen knives at the correct angle the easy way.

The down side to this system is that it only holds blades upto around 1/8" in thickness, so my new Fallkniven knife does'nt fit.
Got around that little problem by holding the knife with a large bulldog clip then attaching the DMT gude clamp to the clip handle.

So whats your favourite sharpener and like me have you found anything that it can't handle without a little bit of improvisation.

Belt sander, buffer, sharpmaker white stones. Best edges I have ever produced! Moran edges are the best!!!!

I've got at least a dozen tools to sharpen knives. I don't see getting down below about 4 and covering my needs. I need the belt sander for the really dull knives and when I'm in a hurry (I've gotten by with a coarse diamond bench hone, but it's slower and more expensive). I need the fine grit diamond bench hone to cut the hard carbides and get a precise edge on the harder alloys. I need my V-style rod sharpener (it actually has medium-coarse, medium-fine, and extra-fine rods) to remove burrs, finish the edges, and do most of my quick light sharpening. The rods are also really good for recurved blades. And of course I need a smooth steel.

I would simply forgo the option of using serrated knives given this simple approach (a trivial sacrifice from my perspective--I could use the Spyderco Sharpmaker instead of my round-rod V-sharpener and compromise the way I sharpen recurves for an improved ability to handle serrations).

Edge Pro Apex. It's sharpened everything for me but my khukuris, and it's not that it can't do the khuks, but I put a different type of edge on them. I also have a cheap 8" bench stone and a smooth steel. I still want a Sharpmaker and a belt sander, all in good time.

The search engine will yield very rich content if you use combinations of words like:

Lansky
Gatco
Edge Pro
EdgePro
Sharpmaker and/or 203 and/or 204
Favorite

I use a variety of different devices like DMT Diamond hones, Gatco Tri-seps and the Sharpmaker 204.

From what I've heard, the Edge-Pro is very highly regarded ( and expensive).

Unless you have to sharpen a really dull edge, the 204 will do a great job and learning to use it is fairly easy. Once you have established a good edge, the white (fine) stones will help you maintain a razor edge.

Hope this helps.

Although I have never used one myself, I have heard fabulous things about the edgepro. I'm probably going to buy the Apex model, but if I can save enough I'm going for the gold. EdgePro Professional. It costs around $300. And that's about the same price as the Sebenza I want... right now I have about $16 saved up for knives

The Ultimate Edge diamond sharpener. They were the original oval diamond rods.I think their made any where from 5" to 12" in length and 1/2 to 3/4 in width.IMO they are by far the best diamond sharpeners.Their a little more expensive tham DMT or EZ Lap.They are'nt written about very much,I think thats because many people have'nt heard of them. With the oval (cats eye)shape you can sharpen serrated and straight edges.

Hummm, I'd have to say a very old sharpening stone bought at a flea market out of a butcher shop. It is very worn and works like a charm.
More up to date = edge pro
