Your First Knife

When I first joined the scouts in the 70's I had a Scout knife. probably an Imperial or Colonial SAK knock-off.
Bought a 110 after I quit the scouts and wore it on my belt for the longest time. Both knives are gone.

My first knife was a Camillus single-bladed electricians knife, which is now sitting right next to me. It was my dads knife (as he's an electrician). He gave it to my older brother and it was passed down to me around the age of 8. I used to use it to murder dandelions and I would throw it across my yard to see if I could get it to stick into the ground (a bit difficult with a rounded out tip). Eventually I hit it on a rock and broke the tip. My next two knives were bought for me by my grandma - a SAK two blader and a Kershaw DWO classic. Now I have over 50 :D

UPDATE: I figured this thing needed a bit of TLC so I sharpened it up, polished the blade a bit, and lubed it up with some Hoppes 9. Thanks for reminding me about this lil guy!

Thanks for the great stories. Fun to read about your first knives. Later in life when I sit back and look at a couple big boxes full of knives I own it is fun to think back on how this addiction started. I have lost plenty, but never sold a knife. I just can't stand to let them go, I still feel sick about some of the knives I have lost. I can't imagine what my knife boxes will look like in another 25 years....

Also, I failed to mention that I got my first knife sometime in the mid-late 80's at about 10 years old, can't remember exactly.

I Wish I Still Had My First Knife. It'd Be Awesome To Just Have As A Comparison. And To Be Able To Show It To My Kids(That I Don't Have Yet) One Day And Be Like "This Was Mom's First Knife." They Would Think It Was Cool.
I Still Have The Pieces To The Rainbow Ridge Runner Lol.
And I Sold All Of My Cheapo Knives When I Started Getting Into Real Name Brand Quality Knives, And I Haven't Looked Back Lol.

Little Kissing Crane slipjoint. It was a gift from my Dad back in '77 or '78. I was 8 or 9 years old.

Thanks for starting the thread. I hadn't thought about this in a few years.

I remember my first. It must have been around 1989. I was about 4 years old and we were living in Karlsrue Germany which is where my dad was stationed in the army. My parents had befriended an East German by the name Peter. Well, one day he was visiting us and I had gotten mad at him for some reason or another. So, the next time he came over, I was still mad, he grabbed my hand and had me hold it open. He then placed a little fingernail type knife in it and said "friend, friend." He didn't speak much English so my parents mainly spoke German when he was around. Recieving that knife completely killed any anger I seemed to have at the time. I'm pretty sure I still have it packed up in a box full of other knives.
I've had a few other folders after that one untill i got what I really consider my first REAL knife. It was a POS plastic handled survival knife. I broke the handle after a couple of weeks, and after a couple of years I was in highschool and decided to make a steel handle for it in shop class. I modified it from a drop point to a clip point, and welded the blade into the handle because I thought it would make it stronger. I also heated it and quenched it in water. Man if I knew the things I know now. I had countless adventures with that knife, and still have it now.IMG_0041.jpgIMG_0039.jpg

My first knife was a SAK that I received when I got my knife safety card in cub scouts. I still have the knife and only recently retired it; the phillips is falling out due to my misuse in my teens. I've tried multiple other SAK and they just arn't the same as my first one I grew up with. I'm carrying a Camillus electricians knife(dad's old knife) at the moment, and looking to add a case(or other US brand) trapper.

The 3 slipjoints in the bottom-left of this photo were my first knives. The small black one was a present from my grandfather when I was no older than 10. My father was hard on knives and broke a lot of blade tips, so the yellow handle one was a hand-down from him. I ground the tip square and used it as a screwdriver/knife when I worked in his garage. The brown handled one was a present from my father.

In the lower center of the photo is a Buck lockback (silver bolsters, maroon micarta) that was one of the first that I ever bought for myself. The black Gerber LST in the righthand side is another one of the earliest knives that I bought for myself.

Almost everything else in the photo I've used for EDC at one time or another. The mini-grip in the upper-left of the photo was my most recent EDC.

My first knife was a cheap, inexpensive SAK copy which was "butter knife" dull and by all means harmless I believe I was 4 or 5 when I first got it. A year or so later my dad got me what I consider to be my first real knife which was a Wenger SAK that looked like a Vic SD classic. It was fairly sharp and I learned the proper knife useage and safety the hard way with that little knife.

Victorinox Spartan (guessing at the model based on what I remember of the implements that were on it). Lost it long ago.

A little buck lockback with a 2.5 inch blade, triangular hole in the blade and black plastic scales

I can't find out what model it was... lost it

My first knife was some knock off Case Stockman style knife three little blades very similar to my now Buck Trio which is way better, and currently my favorite EDC. Buck Trio Pic attached
