Your first "truly awesome" folder

My 1st quality folding knife was probably a Buck 110, bought in the early 80s.

Mine was a CRKT Point Guard. After I bought it, I wanted to see if I had purchased a good quality knife, so I went online and Googled it. Well, I found this place, and as they say, "the rest is history." (including much of my money!).

My first "good" knife, and also my first "Wow!" knife experience came from a Camillus Maxx... I gotta say that no knife afterwards, not even a Sebenza even came close to that same feeling. The closest would have to be a ZT 302.

Mine was also a BM 812. I lost it and a couple of years ago I replaced it. Now it just sits and every once and awhile I'll play with it or carry it for a day.

This Browning lock-back my dad gave me in 80-81 I think.
Still have it.

Benchmade 960. I still remember the smoothness of the opening, and the sharpness... cut myself in the early days of owning it and didn't even feel it. Stood there wondering where all the blood came from...

Spyderco Endura 1 SE, bought it when i was 13 and used the crap put of it. Still have it.

My first superior knife was my fully serrated Spyderco Police model. That thing was a show stopper.

A Gerber "Bolt Lock Action" folder I bought in 1983.
I had a lot of cheapo knives before that, but this one opened my eyes.
27 years and untold $$$ later, I still like that old old Gerber.

The first modern production knife that really impressed me, quality-wise, was an early Vero Beach Microtech LUDT, ca. '96 or so, but it wasn't until I started buying customs that I got hooked on knives as aesthetically appealing objects that transcend their utilitarian value. With one or two rare exceptions, mass-produced knives just don't possess the subtlety of fit and finish to set my little heart a poundin': too many shortcuts and compromises. YMMV, of course.

On the other hand, in over thirty years of knife collecting, I've never seen a knife that was actually able to fill me with 'awe,' and I sincerely doubt that anyone else has either ;). "Awesome" is far too powerful a word to waste on a mundane object, no matter how well designed or crafted it might be.

I would have to say a Spyderco delica 1. I bought it over 20 years ago and it took alot of hard use over that time .

Probably a BM mini skirmish. Had me go wow. I did eventially sell it as I couldnt sharpen it heheh

Hi folks -

Anther vote for Buck 110 here - that was the first one for me that really made me appreciate the workmanship. It is still a wow-knife imo.

A lot of Case knives and a few Puma's have been wow-knives.

I can't wait to start getting my JK Customs - the single knife that I have already received from Stomper was a real wow-maker!

best regards -

Same here -- a Gerber Bolt Action folder was the hook that snagged me. A Spyderco stainless handle Delica took me to the next level. Finally . . . a Sebenza took me to perfection.

That knife for me was my Buck 110. Bought it when I first was on my own. I carried that knife everywhere. I still love that knife. ANd i do still carry it, once in a while.
