Your friends or coworkers traditional knives

My work has never had an issue with pocketknives. A lot of office workers have a clip hanging out, and there are four people I know around that carry traditionals. I think I may have had an influence. The engineer I hang with most in my immediate department carries a #25 Tidioute Barlow every day. He also has a Mini Copperlock and a few peanuts. When I was in my other department a few more people got the fever. One carries a Northwoods Jack, the other a Case traditional with a clip on it. My old boss surprised me once by taking out an Old Timer medium stockman. He carried it every day. It's great to work for a company that will allow people to wear a Buck 110 on their belt if they choose. I know of one person that does. A number of people carry leathermans also.

I grew up in Northern California and most of my friends carried pocket knives but they did have clips. I have always carried one no matter what job I have had but it was always a knife with a clip it seemed. When I moved to AR I noticed even more pocket clips everywhere I go and certainly have never heard of anyone having a restriction on what they carry! I got into traditionals about 2 or 3 years ago now after finding my old scout knife in the garage. After rekindling my love for these knives now I notice them all the time. I see guys pulling case knives out on the job site here on the regular(must be a southern thing :) ). Most all have a clipped utility knives for most of their work though. It is fun reading everyones personal accounts and seeing how its different from region and vocation

I own an auto repair shop. It drives me nuts when a man who is supposed to be ready and able to fix things isn't prepared to do so. Very few mechanics I've seen carry a knife. I have considered in times of frustration, instantly disqualifying job applicants if they didn't come to the interview without a pocket knife......AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!
Sorry for the rant:o

I am a mechanic and I agree with you. The times I need a knife during the course of a normal day makes it as an important of tool as any in my box. I cannot imagine how some guys justify going to work without a knife. Even though the tool trucks have knife displays and sell them on truck accounts. I just don't get it.

I just gave my business partner his first Opinel, he carried a Leatherman when he was in the Marines. The other guy I work with most just got a Spyderco from his wife, but he shoots a revolver on the range, so I think there's hope for him yet.

What a fantastic thread!

I am one of those guys who had a knife in elementary school during the 70s. Most likely it was a SAK or a cheap lockblade but most knives we know today were around back then. I think the only job that had a no-knife policy was when I was a security guard, all others I never asked lol. One job, female employees (or my male boss) would ask me almost every day to open something with my knife, then (just the females) would always ask, "Why do you carry such a big knife?!?". I'd tell them, "Because you don't". Really a 3.5"-4" blade on a folder is not large in the pocket or in use.

My current job is one of those don't ask don't tell places but as far as doing our job we can't even use snap off knives, we have to use spring retractables in case someone leaves a knife on a pallet and someone else doesn't notice it. Anyway, I currently have a Camillus #69 but carried a Buck BHW before that because it was cheap and easy to replace if lost in the warehouse.

As for co-workers, we only had 2 or 3 others really into knives but all were modern and a lot of S&W tacticals. One carried a neck knife openly and I don't think many noticed it besides me or bothered to see what it was. We have a few old guys who look like slipjoint types but I have never seen them with a pocket knife.

PS. I have great respect and awe for the guy who has only carried one knife all his life. They sure may not know much about knives but they certainly know how to use the one they have.
