Rom, there are about 10 variations of 440 steel. One of the common things done by cheap knife companies is to just put "440 Stainless" on the blade and leave the rest up to the buyer.

As others have said, 440c steel is a premium steel, it has been around a long time and despite all of the new super steels it is still highly regarded by users and makers for it's great rust resistance and ease of sharpening.

I would venture a guess to say that your Stanley knife was not 440c, probably 440j2 or some other cheap steel. We're just now getting to the point where 440C steel can be had on knives in the ~$40 range, and even that's rare as it is fairly expensive when compared to AUS8, AUS6 like Columbia River uses.

With that said, this knife looks like a POS and if it's not made in the US I would bet it's not even 440c, probably another "440 Stainless" job.

I'm sure he sells them, but not to me ;)

As for 440c, it's a fine steel. You also have to look at the product it's used for, it makes perfect sense for a belt buckle knife. It offers extremely high performance, while still offering high corrosion resistance.

The only reason I said I didn't like 440C (yes, 440C not 440 stainless) is because I've had my share of knives with 440C and I just don't like it. I never thought I would be one to prefer Steel A over Steel B, never thought I would be able to tell the difference, and honestly I kind of thought everyone who said they could was nutz. I recently got a couple new Spydies a VG-10 and AUS-8 and I was supprised that I was able to tell. Just maybe I'm wrong or just plain mental but I can tell the difference. I hope I didn't offend anyone using 440C or who likes 440C, just not my cup 'o tea.
