Your non outdoorsy type knives, that you use outdoors.

Some Rachel Ray for those of you who prefer her

Personally I prefer Giada

The Buck Squire is my "default" for a gent's folder. A damn fine knife in a very discreet size.

Be gentle with it, the blade is very thin and brittle... I broke one once, it was entirely my fault... but it can cut see-through tomato slices when need be. It's just not meant for any rough work.

CSG : Interesting nomination for a "non-outdoors" etc, knife. Yeah, it's way too small... and the steel is way too brittle... BUT if it was all you had, you could do a lot with it.

Yours,
JT

cmdionne...

Personally, I find a woman in a stain of tomato sauce (?) pretty disturbing, and I'm not sure how we got to this point....

What the heck happened to cupcakes and Rachael Ray? :(

JT, really, the steel is brittle? I thought 420C was what they used on all their knives. I never thought of my 119 or 110 as brittle.

Regardless, I mostly used it for food prep and making tent pegs. I may have made a fuzz stick or two. I loved this knife in the California Wine Country though - a perfect picnic knife!

Tom Krein sells sheaths for the Victorinox paring knife, which are quite nice, I have carried one from time to time.

And a Spyderco Perrin Street Bowie

Yup, compared to many other steels Buck's 420HC is brittle. It will chip rather easily (not terribly) on the brass rod test, and it's very easy to snap the tip off one of thier knives.

Before you Buck fans pile on, let me just say, they aren't advertised or meant to be beaten hard! I'm just saying, be gentle with them and they will cut well all day.

Thanks for that info. I never beat my knives anyway, especially folders. I think of knives as woodworking and rope cutting tools. I can't remember the last time I tried to cut a brass rod with one or used it as a pry bar. :D

I carried a Valor Bali in and out of the woods for years. Ive carried a CS tanto and a Blackjack Mamba camping and broke a Buckmaster 185 choping firewood(I think its more of a dive knife) I plan on packin a Wilkinson self sharpening paring knife in a day pack this spring as a backup camp site knife.
Who knows the paring knife may be the next big thing...

These Victorinox Forstner Pairing knives are amazing little performers. At around $5.00 FULL retail they have to be the best value in the knife world.

Add a kydex sheath and you are good to go. They kydex will last many knives if taken care of.

The entire set up (knife and sheath) weigh next to nothing!

BTW Rachael Ray is HOT AND she loves pitbulls... whats not to like about that?

I frequently use an AG Russell Mini Hocho folding cook's knife for fireside food prep.

Jeff

I've been interested in that knife for a while, you should do up a quick review sometime.

I've actually debated (with myself) about doing a challenge thread this spring/summer that forces us to think outside of the box and go camping with the most unusual knives we can. Maybe with a prize after;)

I have used a partially serrated CRKT Apache in the woods, cut up a hiking staff/club that I found fallen, as well as debarked it. It was interesting to note that the serrations actually made "chewing" around the tree easier than the plain edge. I also have used my partially serrated, tanto tipped Junglee Sahara Jr. in the woods as that is one of my good beaters, and would have it on me during construction work. Last year I took my Damascus Case stockman camping, but it is a good design for outdoors but not many seem to use their damascus where it could get dirty.

For the most part my knives are users so it is not that surprising if I take them out with me (and hopefully a lot more camping this year- I have legs that kind of work now:D- but a pregnant wife- It's true that life gets in the way of all your plans).

The non-woods knife I edc most of the time is a delica (like cmdionne, my edc comes with me into the woods along with fixed blade), but i've also taken my native and endura into the woods (and the Buck 110 of course). I like the slimmer lighter folders since I carry the heavier fixed.

I always figured a knife was a knife, and I carried a Benchmade Mini-AFCK or AFCK hunting, camping and fishing for years. I used to carry a Microtech Mini SCOCOM Elite for a while, too. (Too hard to clean blood and guts out of it, though.)

Stay sharp,
desmobob
