Your opinion of half stops on slip joints?

thanks will, i will definitely look that up!
@pmew: im a bit pragmatic, my knives are all users, i find the half stop annoying and due to the strong springs a nailbraker too.
@trapper 92: i do quite like it on my peanut too, its not that sharp, the tang is a bit more rounded what makes it a sometimes usefull at least not annoying feature. maybe gec decided that function should follow form in this case...
@2dead: we posted @same time ;) ...i second what you said, thanks for the link!
oh...and i am not going to file it down i would fear to ruin them...posted the reason in this thread

Mine are all users too, I have no safe queens. I prefer a strong authoritative spring and have yet to break a nail. I use a pocket knife everyday, and carry some more than others but I go through phases with different patterns. I'd never choose not to go for a pattern due to a halfstop/non-halfstop issue. It's just taste. I personally hate bails and lanyards. I think they look nice and I know some people love them but they bug the expletives out of me, when I'm using a knife.

:)

list says #81 abilene is without half stops...i'm happy now!
@pmew: i think theres no need for too strong springs, during cutting the blade stays open anyway...and as i do make slipjoints myself for a hobby, i know it could be done to make it easy open strong close, but that wouldnt look that nice as the spring would ride deeper when closed.

I love half stops! If done properly, They add a solid yet smooth tactile sensation every time the blade is opened and closed. My GEC 15 clip point has a very nice half stop and my Scagel Fruitport is sublime. I liken it to the feel of the shifter on a miata. Neither are perfectly flush at the half stop but it doesn't bother me on a production knife.

I hunk half stops to best with blades which can be pinched open...I can see how they could rip fingernails using a nail nick. I can't stand knives which require the use of a nail nick. My GEC is pinchable, but not by a lot. The Scagel is amazing - nice firm pull but super easy to open due to the amount of exposed blade and the slot. I would think a softer spring would be better suited to blades requiring the nail nick, especially if it has a half stop.

I see half stops as both a core traditional feature and a premium feature. They add a tremendous level of enjoyment to a slipjoint for me. Hard to explain, but I really dig the walk and talk of a nice slipjoint with a half stop. I am constantly looking for excuses to cut stuff so I can snick, snick it open and snick, snick it closed.

You should post up some pictures of your work, Bjoern; we'd love to see your own slipjoints :)

As I said, it's all preference. I like a strong authoritative spring, a weak spring just feels limp to me - like a pathetic handshake. But whatever nibbles your biscuit my friend ;)

I like having half stops on the knives that have them, I don't mind not having them on the knives that don't; sort of like blade steel to me - if I like the knife those features are all minor points. OH

I very much prefer 1/2 stops with a good strong pull, love the feel, love the sound. It isn't a game changer though,
some patterns are correct with half stops others should have cam tangs.

Best regards

Robin

I also prefer half-stops, because - i think - it makes the slipjoints something special.

I strongly agree!! when hitting the half stop of a properly made slipjoint you can hear the armonics....walk and sing!!
