Your opinion wanted on NEW Premium Scout

Here's a photoshopped mock up of the basic arrangement of tools that I'd like to see:

Cheers to what you said, supratentorial. Great information there.

As to the bottle opener, I am curious if it would be legal/ possible to use a variation of "the Victorinox can opener/ bottle opener/ flat head driver" tool that is seen on the Vic Compact and other select models.

It is in many ways a superior bottle opener since it can also open cans and turn flat head screws. It is a single tool that can accomplish three distinct tasks (as well as prying).

It would be perfect for this situation and would also save you from hanging a p-38 from your bail. (I like the bail:thumbup:)

After all, the scout knife is primarily built for utility. Would it be frowned upon to update this aspect of a traditional knife? I hope not:D.

A.G., I agree with you. A Scout Knife should have a bale. But I’d like to see a stop on it. Something to keep the bale from flopping down into the path of the main blade.

AG, I think you hit a home run with this one. I love it! This configuration is very useful.

I prefer this to a stand alone p-38. The p-38 may be a better can opener, but most of the time I will have a "real can opener." On the rare occasions that I don't have a real can opener, I can get by with the one in the knife above. I wold likely take the p-38 off of the bale as it looks like it would be in the way, and to my mind is more easily lost...

The knife I have on me most often these days is a NOS Camillus Cub Scout. I picked it up several years ago in an out-of-the-way Scout Store. Main blade, punch, bottle opener/screwdriver. It does 90% of the stuff I carry a knife for.

An updated version of this would be great! The P38 is fine and even if I lose it and REALLY need to open a can, a stout wharncliff blade will do the trick.

Keep it around 3.5-4" OAL, very much bigger would be too big.

If at all possible, the simple liner-locks on the punch and screwdriver are a must have.

Gotta have a bail.

For scales, a nice Honey Amber bone stag would look primo. Orange 'Rucarta' would be a nice option for those of us who are prone to 'misplacing' our knives.

A drop or even a 'barlow' type clip point would be outstanding.

Stainless or tool steel? Though I'm firmly in the tool steel camp, whatever you pick will be fine.

You talked about the forged punch. I'm thinking that the screwdriver needs to be pretty stout also. Unless you've already got that licked, I predict many long nights at the drawing board getting one that satisfies you.

I'm pretty stoked about this and am really looking forward to seeing (and buying!) the finished knife!

I like the route supratentorial went, myself. I'm a fan of having a phillips and some type of flat head driver. Pointy clip-point main blade with some type of secondary blade.

I'm resurrecting this one because I've been most patient in waiting for the newest version of the Premium Scout.
A.G., is this ever going to happen?

Mr. Russell:
Everything you originally specified except I think making the bottle opener into a combination bottle opener/can opener would be more practical. I can't think of a design except for the SAK variety (regular and combo toll), but I'm sure you can come up with something. Cheers!

We are working on it. I have one maker that I know could make them, but, he is so backed up that I have had to find someone else. I now have some one that I am pretty sure of. He is delivering his first job now and another shortly and as soon as I see that his production is as good as his samples I will send the drawings.

The one thing I have had to learn, in dealing in China is Patience. In my life in the knife business NOTHING has ever gone as fast as I expected or was promised. I can get the quality I want, that I was never able to get anywhere since I lost the Bertram company in Germany, even better today, BUT, never, NEVER, fast enough.

Hang with me, it is in the pipe line, the designs are final and ready to send, just as soon as we are sure of this new maker.

I am sorry, I cannot think of a way to have a superior can opener if you try to combine it with a bottle opener.

I like the idea but would prefer a combo opener and a locking main blade maybe in S30V

A good thought, but, not easy. I prefer many steels to S30V, ATS34, VG10, D2, even ZDP-189, BUT adding $40 or 50 USD to the cost is not an option. We will have to settle for something like D2 or VG-10

My thoughts exactly. I had one of this pattern, sold it, and recently bought it back. When I need a larger utility pattern, this is my go-to knife.

Main blade: thick, with a saber-grind.
Sheepfoot blade, instead of a can opener; I have several P38's and P-51's that go with me when camping, so a can opener on a knife is not really needed, at least for me.
Screwdriver/cap-lifter: Most of my utility knives have the screwdriver shapped to fit the screws of my Finnish model 39 rifle, or the scale screws of my Becker BK-7. (I replaced the socket cap screws with stainless slotted screws.)
Awl: works great as a scraper, can be used as a single-tine fork when eating if needed.

A.G., just about everything you've made has been great. I'll definitely be buying one of your Premium Scouts for me and my son.

Eagle Scout here. In all my years in Scouts, I never used a can opener. Not once.

I think a saw, scissors, or some driver bits would be the best. I currently have an EDC that goes with me without fail. It has alum scales, a cap lifter, can opener, and a nail file.
