Your opinion....?

That looks like a medieval torture device, just thinking about being in that thing with it swaying in the breeze makes my stomach roll, not to mention being in that position for hours. Chris

I'd like to hear from some proponents of such a shelter, since the arguments in favour aren't readily coming to my mind.

My first impression is that it is a survival shelter that is highly sensitive to location. In fact, for the system to be useful, you would need to find a tree branch with the appropriate height and strength, and without any intervening branches to get in the way of the hanging shelter.

Other disadvantages that spring to mind:

- It seems to me that the conditions that would make it possible to deploy this shelter optimally would also inhibit effective fire starting and maintenance (certainly, you couldn't maintain your fire from the shelter, let alone bring it close to you - unless you wanted to gently roast yourself).

- looks like it would be difficult to set up and use when injured. Imagine trying to attach that thing to a tree and climb in after breaking your wrist in a fall.

- attempts to provide shelter in spite of nature, not through nature. Most other temporary shelter techniques I have seen take advantage of natural wind breaks, overhangs, heck - natural shelter. This one puts you in an exposed situation where you are entirely dependent upon your gear.

Again, I'd be interested in hearing some 'pro' opinions, for the sake of argument.

All the best,

- Mike

I think the key verbage is "rock face"! I could see rock climbers carrying one if it isn't too heavy/bulky. If somebody is injured or bad weather unexpectedly rolls in, they could hang this up and be 'safe'. I've seen some weird contraption some of those guys use for 'camping' on rock faces, so this isn't so absurd for that use.

Now for hanging out of a tree!?! No way for me! :) I'd rather have my butt safely ON the ground and do something for shelter accordingly, not to mention have the capability to at least have a candle or small fire for warmth as well!

The wind and cold temps under you will suck the body heat right out of the shelter. YOu will freeze in very cold temps.

That's a human pinata, just begging for someone to sneak up on you with a baseball bat. :)

Maybe I'm just getting old but that looks pretty freaky to me. It looks hard to get in and out of too. While were on looks, one of those is wierd, six of them is an alien invasion and could reasonably be fired upon. I'll stick with my tarp and bivy and if I'm going to hang from trees it will be in a hammock. Mac

I agree with you , I would say get a Hennessey Hammock and go with that.

Lotta good responses I didn't think of. I thought it was goofy too when I first seen it, but I always give things a second looky.

I'll bet just about anybody could get a rope around that before you could get out of it. Mac

It would be no different than sleeping in a small cave, and if there is no trees or large cliffs in your area then it wouldn't be a good purchase. It might be a fun thing to try when camping.

I have a couple thing to say.
I see waking up and tumbling out of that thing.
If you have get out in a emergency, I can see if you getting hurt or twisting an ankle when getting out of it.
In a situation in high winds...For those of us who get motion sickness, well you know...
I can see that being very cold in the winter time.
As stated before did you ever try to sleep in that positions before?
I'm sure that the list could go on, but these are the first things that just came to mind.

Look. Bear toys. What if there are no trees? And what if the limb breaks? Does it take up your whole backpack? Do I have to take two dramamine before bed? Look a body snatcher pod, Hit it with a stick, Kill it. Is it true? Aliens grow on trees? Looks like an emergency body bag to me.

not for me , looks awkward to get into and out of , the idea of finding a cliff to dangle over doesnt appeal , seriously , I always been taught to stay away from cliffs not to dangle over them for shelter
I can just see it swinging around and flogging against the tree trunk in a serious wind ..
and the thought of spending serious time sitting / up hunched .. my back is hurting allready
Hell yeah , Id buy two , I can think of a couple of folk Id LOVE to give these too :)

hey, look at the bright side. The searchers will have a way easier time finding your body to recover!:D

You'll be just "hanging around".

My wonderful Mother took care of me like that for 9 mos. and then I'd had enough and left for the great out of doors. No way I'm not going back!!!!

There is something deeply disturbing about it's shape. Perhaps John Moriarty subconsiously wishes to grow a set of balls.
