I'd like to hear from some proponents of such a shelter, since the arguments in favour aren't readily coming to my mind.
My first impression is that it is a survival shelter that is highly sensitive to location. In fact, for the system to be useful, you would need to find a tree branch with the appropriate height and strength, and without any intervening branches to get in the way of the hanging shelter.
Other disadvantages that spring to mind:
- It seems to me that the conditions that would make it possible to deploy this shelter optimally would also inhibit effective fire starting and maintenance (certainly, you couldn't maintain your fire from the shelter, let alone bring it close to you - unless you wanted to gently roast yourself).
- looks like it would be difficult to set up and use when injured. Imagine trying to attach that thing to a tree and climb in after breaking your wrist in a fall.
- attempts to provide shelter in spite of nature, not through nature. Most other temporary shelter techniques I have seen take advantage of natural wind breaks, overhangs, heck - natural shelter. This one puts you in an exposed situation where you are entirely dependent upon your gear.
Again, I'd be interested in hearing some 'pro' opinions, for the sake of argument.
All the best,
- Mike
