I was hoping a bunch of you guys would be willing to share your opinions.
Thank You in advance for any of you who are willing to offer your input.
You can say this wood is butt ugly and it won't hurt my feelings.
I wanted to hear what you have to say before I make my decision whether to send this stuff in for stabilizing.
In the past there have been woods I thought were cool but nobody else did.
On the other side of the coin there have been woods I thought were ugly, but a lot of you guys wanted it. Example Black Palm.

This wood is cut from a standing dead Black Oak bunion. The spalting changed the look to random blotches of color.
When sanded finer it will show rays but not much else in the way of figuring.

Please let me know what you think. Good stuff or junk?

Mark,

At first look it says dye me. It has a lot of character in the grain. Adding color would really make it jump.

Regards, Fred

I agree with fred, has potential!

You always find really good pieces mark I'm sure you can make these pop in a good way.

You have a good point Fred and you other guys. The rays tend to resist the dye (at least it did with non spalted oak) so it might get an interesting look.
When I dyed some similar spalted maple it had a good contrast between the areas that show as brown red and the background white.

Any suggestions for colors?

desert camo!

I love that stuff as it is. It would look great with some white m@%#^! . :D

If you do end up dying it, can you pull the one in the top right for me and leave it alone?

I hate to be negative, but personally I would pass. Now, dyed? It might turn out really cool.

I'll take an au naturale chunk please!
lower left corner- oh yeah, how big are they?

Hahahahahahahahahaha! :D:D:D

I think it's cool... What I like about it is that it's out of the ordinary.

Reminds me of a paint pony....

Id like to see a peice with some tung oil on it and could look really cool dyed. just stay away from red and brownish colors. Mybe a blue or geen or black.

I cut them all too big. That way some can end up on big fighters.
Right now I am leaning toward keeping a few like the one you mentioned natural.
For colors to dye, maybe black & blue & purple.

I'd vote good unusual, but it may be hamstrung just because it's an oak and not a more popular type wood. Maybe stabilize, with or without dye, just a little bit to see how it comes out and is received. Then again you can probably project best where the ready block would fit in your lineup.

Thanks for showing them, a few appear very nice, Craig

Absolutely love this stuff personally, and I tend to dislike a lot of the "usual" wood people favor.

The last three blocks on the right column are especially interesting to me, and I'd love to see them left un-dyed. However, as mentioned, both regular and double dye processes have a LOT of potential with this wood.

I think you knew this stuff was awesome and are just being coy! ;)
