Just wondering what everyone`s preferences are in knives, so I can get some idea of what to focus on in 2014. You can make more than one choice, but I would really appreciate it if you could post your reasons why you chose what you did.

The 2 best excuses I have for spending good money on a knife are EDC which for me is a traditional slip lock folder) or a deer and big game knife.

Please take a few minutes and explain why you chose what you did. Otherwise this poll is of no use .

I chose neck knife because I like a small fixed blade for EDC, and bushcraft because I always carry a knife when stompin around in the great outdoors.

I voted Hunting, because that's the bulk of my outdoor knife use. (In reality it should be Hunting/Trapping for me :p)

voted for neck knife and bushcraft, I don't hunt and I don't find myself in many tactical situations in the rough world of driving from my quiet county house to a university classroom and back :) I do like both of those kinds though as a knife nut

I feel the hiker might be lonely as my only bushcraft style knife, and I'm always rotating and trying new EDC's though i think we all know my fixed blade EDC is pretty set no matter how much I try out, so I'm more interested in experimenting with folding knives for my edc (I don't know the GEC 68 will be beaten but there is a chance which is more then I can say for the TK :D...maybe by a JK ff :D)

honestly I might be looking for a camp blade, kitchen/bushcraft kinda thing, but for the interest a certain recent post leading to a certain older review has sudden sparked in my suddenly aching heart for a LOBO....and a bluegill...and a Andy's Bowie, as I'm calling it :p...I'm pretty messed up preference and decision making wise when it comes to knives so i'm probably of no use to this poll. Sorry about that.

I've been paying a lot of attention to what knives actually get used lately. What I've found is that slim blades around 3-4 inches get used much more often than any others. Full, comfortable handles and thin pointy blades can be used in the kitchen, workshop or outdoors much more easily and are easier to carry than large thick/wide blades.
Big knives are cool and fun to ogle but small knives get used.

My thoughts exactly.

I also keep thinking that a 1/16" thick Lobo with a scandivex edge would be a wicked slicer.

Bushcraft is the only knives that sees any real use except from my edc-folders.

I chose bushcraft and neck knives. I picked "bushcraft" for the general shape and all-around utilitarian capabilities, and "neck" for the size. I've found that smaller FBs are the most useful of all knives for me to carry. By smaller, I mean a 2 1/2" to 3 1/4" blade and a 3 3/4" to 4" handle. I like the overall package to be between 6 1/2" to 7" OAL Flat ground spear points & drop points are my favorite grinds and tips. A fairly straight overall profile and concealability are very high on my list of needs with a small FB. I typically carry a BRKT Northstar EDC (my fav FB) or a BRKT Essential (love the M4 and the OAL). I also use Izulas, BK14s, and an ESEE 4 (my larger FB). I don't care much for "super steels" or high end experimental stuff. I like tried-and-true (1095, 52100, A2, 154CM), although I do like BRKT's M4 & 3V. If I carry a folder, it's almost always a BM 525, BM mini-Bone Collector, a Native 5, or a Para 2. I prefer the blade shapes and tips on the BMs and the Native 5, but the Para 2 is just such a sweet overall package that I overlook the tip and blade shape to carry the knife.

I'm 65 YO and have carried a knife for 60 of those years. I'm a "tool" guy, not a "tactical" user. Never been near a knife fight and it's not on my list of things to do. I like the light weight and maneuverability of smaller knives and the strength and dependability of FBs. Pocket sheaths and 45 deg or horizontal carry cross draw sheaths are my choice for carrying.

I do like handmade knives. I have several from Alan Davis and a larger bushcrafter style FB that they call a Green River pattern from the Mathews bros. at Twin Blades in Statesboro GA. I don't "collect" knives, I just buy what I plan to use if it strikes my fancy.

HTH, and thanks for asking us.

Neck knife and bushcraft. As had already been mentioned, they get used more than my big knives. Easier to carry, conceal from those who run shrieking from a "weapon" (dumb), and lighter in weight. Love the Lobo size, just not an EDC.

I chose Bushcraft since that option probably applies to my uses the most out of bunch...

Maybe I should of picked neck knife since I dearly love small EDC fixed blades.

These are my two favorite categories.

I voted & had to run,sorry about that chief.:o
(not that my vote counts anymore being unemployed & unable to get on The List.)

Buchcraft & Hunting got my vote, because that is what I use my fixed blade knives for mostly.
I don't need a fixed blade for EDC as a folder will do for most every day tasks, but I do carry one in my EDC pack for emergencies.(legal or not :p)
But for camping/bushcrafting I like a nice tough fixed blade with a pointy 5" blade. Some will say 3-4 inch is optimal, but I like the extra length for batoning & the unlikely but always possible chance of defense against a critter attack.(there are bears & cats where I camp)
My ideal hunting setup would be 2 knives.
A 1/8" thick x 1" high x 5" saber ground flat clip/drop point blade for cleaning/gutting & chopping through the pelvic bone.(Improved Bowie)
And a short thin skinner like the Traditional Style Hunter with a nice big belly in 3/32" stock but a 3" blade.Full flat or scandi grind, either would work as a thin sharp edge is key.

And like jobasha11 said..a big chopper, just because they are fun.

I chose Bushcraft and neck knife. I like the bushcraft style knives because they are simple and effective. You don't need all kinds of tactical features, just a nice edge. I chose the neck knife because I like small fixed blades. I can carry them on my belt at work and around and not have to worry about scaring non-knife people

I live in Australia and have no interest in 'tactical' knives. Most knives are illegal to carry around EDC unless you have a very good reason so neck knives can't be carried. I like hunting but don't get the opportunity where I live. I do go camping/hiking whenever I can though and always take a couple of bushcraft knives, hence my choice in the poll.

NECKERS! Put 'me on your neck, put 'me in your pocket... Very easy, convenient, and effective

I have no need for "tacticool" knives -- but that line gets blurry when most of the commercial production fixed blades seem to be coated these days.
I tend to blur hunting and bushcraft together -- I like belly on my blades, I tend to use blades in the under 10" OAL range for most tasks. I like having a 6-7" necker in my front pocket for convenience. 3 1/4" handle is pretty much as short as I find comfortable for a 3- finger grip, 4.5"-5" is a comfortable full size handle. not a fan of big choils or ricassos.
