I just found out my state, Georgia, updated their knife laws a few years ago. Now it's a very simple law, knives with blades under 5" are legal, and no local law can be stricter than the state law which eliminates all the confusing county/city ordinances.
So now that I can carry knives with blades over 3", which is what it was before, I want to get some but I don't know which. I've been considering many. Here are my candidate knives so far and my thoughts
Spyderco Street Bowie - this actually would be perfect. No frills, a simple yet highly ergonomic design. However there's one problem, Spyderco's website lists the blade length as 5.05", .05 of an inch over the legal limit. The cutting edge is only 4.74" though, and would an officer even count or notice the 0.05 inch especially if it's part of the non-edge?
Spyderco Police - I've always liked the look of completely steel knives. With a blade length of 4.125 inches this is clearly legal to carry in my state, but I just worry about the word "Police" being stamped on there. It seems like this might cause any real police officers to place additional scrutiny and suspicion on me were there ever a situation in which they'd be looking at my knife. Also the ergonomics aren't nearly as great as the Street Bowie because there's not much of a finger choil, and while the stainless steel looks great it doesn't provide the best grip. I know there's a g10 version but there'd still be that lack of choil and not much jimping on the spine.
Spyderco Titanium Military - This is a blade about 4" but it seems like everyone has this knife. I noticed there was a fluted version, which would make it more unique, but that the titanium scales were thinner on that model.
Benchmade Nimravus - This seems good, I don't favor the aluminum handles though, are they still making these in G10? Any thoughts on this knife in general?
Emerson Super CQC8 - With a 4.3" blade this seems ok, and I like Emerson because they're one of the lesser known knife companies, well compared to Kershaw, Spyderco, and Benchmade at least. But perhaps there's an even bigger bladed folding knife that Emerson, or one of the other good, lesser known companies makes? This is one of the questions I was hoping the people on the forum would be able to answer. I'm hoping to hear about some large folders with blades just under 5" or some mid-sized fixed blades with the same, that would be good in self-defense.
