I just found out my state, Georgia, updated their knife laws a few years ago. Now it's a very simple law, knives with blades under 5" are legal, and no local law can be stricter than the state law which eliminates all the confusing county/city ordinances.

So now that I can carry knives with blades over 3", which is what it was before, I want to get some but I don't know which. I've been considering many. Here are my candidate knives so far and my thoughts

Spyderco Street Bowie - this actually would be perfect. No frills, a simple yet highly ergonomic design. However there's one problem, Spyderco's website lists the blade length as 5.05", .05 of an inch over the legal limit. The cutting edge is only 4.74" though, and would an officer even count or notice the 0.05 inch especially if it's part of the non-edge?

Spyderco Police - I've always liked the look of completely steel knives. With a blade length of 4.125 inches this is clearly legal to carry in my state, but I just worry about the word "Police" being stamped on there. It seems like this might cause any real police officers to place additional scrutiny and suspicion on me were there ever a situation in which they'd be looking at my knife. Also the ergonomics aren't nearly as great as the Street Bowie because there's not much of a finger choil, and while the stainless steel looks great it doesn't provide the best grip. I know there's a g10 version but there'd still be that lack of choil and not much jimping on the spine.

Spyderco Titanium Military - This is a blade about 4" but it seems like everyone has this knife. I noticed there was a fluted version, which would make it more unique, but that the titanium scales were thinner on that model.

Benchmade Nimravus - This seems good, I don't favor the aluminum handles though, are they still making these in G10? Any thoughts on this knife in general?

Emerson Super CQC8 - With a 4.3" blade this seems ok, and I like Emerson because they're one of the lesser known knife companies, well compared to Kershaw, Spyderco, and Benchmade at least. But perhaps there's an even bigger bladed folding knife that Emerson, or one of the other good, lesser known companies makes? This is one of the questions I was hoping the people on the forum would be able to answer. I'm hoping to hear about some large folders with blades just under 5" or some mid-sized fixed blades with the same, that would be good in self-defense.

If you like the Street Bowie the Perrin Le Bowie XL midtech has a 4 1/4" blade.

Since you mentioned Street Bowie as the first option I think you may want fixed blade. I recommended you to look at Winkler's Belt knife. If it good enough for navy seal it should good enough for anyone :)

Both the Perrin Le Bowie XL and Winkler Belt knife are right up my alley. I see that the Winkler is more expensive but the length is right under 5" which is what I want, right to the legal limit.

Spyderco has a couple others, the K2 (which are on sale at the moment) and the Szabo, both about 4.5"+. I like 4" blades myself and usually carry either a ZT 452, Benchmade 710 or Crooked River, or CRKT Otonashi Noh Ken. A Protech large Don is 5". After that, Cold Steel seems to have the corner on really large folders.

Although it comes in at the lower end of your 4-5" blade requirements, there's the Benchmade 810 Contego. It'd be a good choice for a tactical folder IMO.

Over 4" is fixed blade territory for my personal taste, but If money's no issue, get an Olamic Wayfarer.
It's only 4" but you won't regret it. After handling one, it's found it's way high on my to do list, (just money's an issue, lol).

Benchmade crooked river or Zero Tolerance 0452 is another (cheaper) nice 4" option
Viper Start I got my eye on too.

If you really just want to push the 5" limit
Spyderco police III
OR
Entrek strike point or counter strike gets you close, without going over.

A. G. Russell has a new 4.something" bladed knife that looks way cool. I've not yet been to his store to check it out, but it's on my short list of things to do. Great materials, awesome design, all backed by A. G.'s exceptional customer service.

A more budget friendly option is the SOG Seal Pup. Either sheath is excellent, 5" blade, no frills.

I'd suggest Aqua Salt for a fixed blade, excellent sheath, awesome ergos, brutal cutting power and pretty stabby:

I see it as the smaller Perrin Bowie, really

For a folder, in the 4 to 5 inch range, I'd get a Resilience, Police, Otanashi noh Ken, or a 4in. Cold Steel...
