Well its finally summer time-ish here in Michigan. And between last summer and now getting into knifemaking, I am super excited to hit up some more auctions and rummage sales this year for supplies. I'm really looking for a decent anvil, and maybe an old file set. A band saw would be nice but I'm not holding my breath.

Post pics of some of your knifemaking finds either from auction or rummage sale!!

I was going to start a similar thread.

A laundry basket full of swing arm lamps for me.

1-3$ each instead of the usual $25 they are now

Plus the old ones have metal parts and ceramic outlets , the new plastic
I may have to fix some things, but I have to do that with the new ones too.

try moving this over to shop talk for more answers, arm and hammer is a dead zone.

Thats awesome! I need a lot more light in my shop. And yea I wasn't really sure where to post this.

Any mods could you please move to Shop Talk? That would be great.

I bought a rockwell hardness tester for $100 at a swap meet. It was clear the guy didn't know how to use it. I think he thought it didn't work or wasn't accurate. Anyway after he quoted me the price he "showed me how to use it". I showed him what I thought he was doing wrong and it tested spot on. I felt bad taking it for $100 so I even asked him if he still wanted to sell, he said he did, but I think maybe he just felt sheepish. I've felt guilt about it since then...but tell you what, its been immensely helpful in helping me dial in my heat treat!

And thats a super deal!

I bought an older model bench top Duracraft brand drill press at my local "Sanford and Son" junk shop for $40. It works good and now I have a drill press at home in addition to the floor standing drill press 30 miles away at the wood shop.

I get a lot of buzzsaw blades and use them for making knives. They are usually 1080-1095series or equivalent. I have them tested. But I got 3 of them for $40. 2 19inch diameter ones and a 27inch. The big ones are close to 1/4 and are fun to forge. I bought 20 cut off wheels for an angle grinder for $4 once. Swap meets are good because you never know what you'll find.

Craigslist has been my go to. This past year I got a Peter Wright anvil, two leg vises, Delta wood/metal 14" bandsaw, huge heavy duty Delta drill press, and a 225v ac/DC arc welder. I paid under $600 for ALL of it(from different people though). Gotta be on your game and have money set aside for when the time is right.

I pick up files and farrier's rasps on a fairly regular basis. Hit the jackpot at a sale a few weeks ago, got a practically new burnout furnace and casting table w/dome and vacuum pump for $50. Of course there are always the things that can be written off to a swing and miss like the 2 hp single phase motor I bought before I realized I needed a 3 phase, and the VFD I bought that after I got it home realized it required 3 phase in (which I don't have). Most of my shop is tooled up from garage sales: Band saws, bench griders, all of my bench vises. Still looking for the garage sale forge press or power hammer. You will find everything you need at a garage sale....... eventually.

If someone wouldn't know better they'd think that I started a collection of vices.
I have seven now, but seeing a good one for ~$15,- I can't pass it by

I don't blame you, I never see any kind of vise on Craigslist for less than $50, most over $100.

Do pawn shops count? I got a 4 inch leg vise at one for 60$ one time... I thought it was a pretty rockin deal!

A bigger vise would be an awesome find. I've been working with a 3" Menards vice for $20. Works.....but would love something bigger.
