Your sheath of choice??

I have leather, kydex and kydex and nylon. All have their pros and cons and as Dwayne said, it is as much about the belt supporting it as the sheath/knife combo. I have however decided that with the ASH (or any larger knife) I like a little drop over that given by a tec-lok attached right to a sheath. My leather sheaths are all a bit loopy ;) for this reason and both Dave Brown and Eric (Mashed Cat) make excellent drops for kydex.

One and one only would be kydex with a drop and an ESEE pouch attached (much like Dave's pictured setup), my heart leans to leather, and forgoing the end of the world as we know it I would also lean that way.

No much use I know. I have LOTS of ASH1 sheaths as you would imagine... ;) ;)

Both are good choices, for a CG or coated version kydex is excellent, for satin however Leather as it will not scratch the blade
As much as I love dry leather. Use wet leather for a few days and it'll make you love kydex.

Leather. Won't crack if its dropped, or too cold.

Now. If you want it to disappear, high rise kydex. Make sure that handle is up in your ribcage and no one will know the difference. I carried a Badger Attack Ergo go work for five months, every day. No one said a word. It was cool.

Ya I'm goin leather for the satin... but I'm gonna go for some of David Browns SICK kydex for 3 other coated blades. Thanks for the input an advice guys!!! :)

I think I'd go with the leather (with possible kydex lining) multicarry set up that's brewing in someone's (maybe not entirely right) head...

Rob,

Get both.

This is what I did for my TGLB, I have a very nice Skystorm/Patriot leather sheath and an Azwelke Kydex. I can then choose each day which would suit my needs better. Plus if one sheath fails for some reason I will always have a back-up. I only do this for blades that I regularly carry. I have two sheaths for the Rodent Solution as well one Buy Brown IWB and an AzWelke Taco.

I can tell you for sure that if you can part with your blade for a time that Patriot Leather is the bees knees. I cannot speak for other Leather Sheath makers, but the rapid release system that Patriot Leather has will spoil you to the point that you will never want a leather sheath without it again.

Best of luck in your search.

There is lots of good sheaths. For leather I use Leatherman because I like strong solid leather. For Kydex, Dave Brown makes the strongest Kydex I have seen and it fits perfect.

Leather definitely adds a touch of class. I love the look and smell of it. One thing I do not like about leather is is snaps, ect to secure the knife in the sheath. They have a way of working themselves open in the field and losing a knife is a possibility. Sometimes I add a leather lace with a square knot to prevent this but it slows down deployment quite a bit. This may not be a problem for less active folks but when working around the ranch or hunting it can be a real problem.

Kydex is more impervious to the weather and has much better tension around the handle to help in retention. I find it much more comfortable to carry kydex sheaths with a nylon or leather belt loop that will flex and move with you. A loop about 2" distributes the weight of the knife very nicely making it feel lighter so long as you have a suitable belt. The rigidity of a teklok attached to the sheath is not comfortable to me.

Many of my favorites have both leather and kydex. Heavy activity or inclimate weather days it's kydex. Bumming around its leather.

.

Prior to a hunt, this gets applied to all my leather jackets, boots, holsters, and sheaths. I haven't dealt with wet leather in decades.

If I like a knife- Mashed Cat

If I love a knife- Martin Swinkles
.... Mashed Cat, Al Welke or Dave Brown for all my kydex ... ;)

Has Swinkles sorted himself out ? He left a good few people swinging and this led to he BF banning I believe. I would love to think he has as his work is wonderful !

I prefer leather, but Kydex is more impervious to the elements and tends to cost less. As another said, leather for most of my favorite knives (but a few have Kydex; it has its place).
