Your shop knife?

Mostly I use whatever knife I can find in my horribly messy shop. I generally have a few el cheapos that I tend to get for Christmas that I won't worry about if I have to cut on something nasty or if I get epoxy on them etc.

ya'll got some damn fancy look'en shop knives, in my shop i use mostly the same couple knives for everything. i do have one i use for leather but it's not in the pic. shown are a thin tool i made from 1095 with a scriber on one end and a scraper on the other, i use to remove harden epoxy from file work and other areas , i also use a lil nickle silver tool i made for areas near the blade. the screw driver looking thing is used for the same thing, and the other knife (actually file worked damascus blade) i use for cutting sand paper sheets into disc on the sander.

sorry the pic is terrible

Here is one of the first knives I made and did not have a heart to throw it away. So I decided to utilizes it in the shop for opening up boxes, cutting leather, and what ever I needed to uses it for. Its been a dandy in times of need. :)

Looking back holding it in my hand I can see a big difference in today achievements. That's one way to see if you are getting better in making a knife. At the time I thought it was the greatest achievement in my life. But looking back I am almost ashamed as it. But we all must start somewhere. Thanks for your time in viewing this small piece of work. :D

This has been done before, but maybe it's time to do it again :)

What do you use for a knife in your shop? Do you use one of your own?

I have several of my own... 90% of which do not have a handle ;) I also fetched a lot of Hyde utility knives out of the trash at work as they just threw them away after using them once.

I'll try to get a pic at some point of mine.

So wha-cha got??? :D

So, what knife do you use? :)

forgot to post the one I use the most with my leather stuff
a lovely small wharncliff blade by Tony Bose, quite the cutter in D2!

I have a number of them........they are called screwups.

Same here. They're ugly, have yucky plunges, nasty scratches, etc. but it's still worthwhile to put a good edge on them and beat the snot out them for testing purposes.

I have a couple , a small remington lockback , a super knife , an Alan Folts utility and this one (bottom knife ) I made a few years ago..1095 with black paper micarta , took a killer edge and I use it to open boxes as well as skiving leather.

Nice John, you got a shot of that Folts you have?

Gary I dont have a pict of the Folts Utility I have , but it is like this one , except way back Mr Folts sent me the ground blade and bolster material and scale materials to finish it.

Finished mine very similar to this one ( Alan's pict ).

I have a blade in the shape of a DP hunter that used to be a circular saw blade, the handle is several wraps of filament boxing tape. Another is a blade that broke in quench, left me with almost 1.5" of blade that I made a nice leather cutter out of. I'll post a pic later. :)

Forged ball bearing 52100? I ripped the walls out of our bathroom with this one. Abused it terrible. It wont hold an edge but is tough like a prybar.

The second one is made from a saw blade and pakka wood. Its one of the first knives I made. It takes abuse and begs for more. Good edge holding of L6.

Next is a taxidermy knife with the replaceable insert blades and my ivory handle. The blades are shaving sharp but wear out quickly. Good thing there are only $25 per box of 100

the last is my kershaw. Wont hold an edge for anything but I like the assisted opener.

Thanks John, I remember that one now that you posted it
looks like a handy dandy one for sure!

Nick, you jerk... you started a thread about what knives knifemakers use in their shops and then never posted your own?

DUMBASS!

This is a couple of non-spectacular shop knives I have 'made'... The bottom one works great for cutting leather, very rigid, what's left of a water quenched 1095 blade that broke during quench.

Matt, I think that Nick had a thread all about his EDC knife, maybe it was that one
he was thinking about when starting this thread?
