Your take on D2

Message_1499654500182.jpg I'm actually working on a thrower and it's in .210" D2 (thickest stock I have). I'm in the process of tempering down to a goal of 57-58. I hardened to 65RC after cryo and I've been slowly bumping up the temper. Currently cooking for 2 hours at 700F.

That is a fantastic looking blade my friend. The lines and proportions are perfect. If I were a fixed blade sort of guy I'd be scrambling to give you some money right about now.

I've gone through all these comments with great interest. I have a Benchmade 551 with a D2 coated blade but I am considering a plain blade. Just curious how well it will hold up without the black finish.

I also have another one in 154cm. I plan to part with one but which, one?

I have a Griptilian in D2 and it's an awesome blade. The knife handles anything I toss at it. Benchmade seems to do a fine job with D2.

D2 will hold up pretty well. It's not fully stainless but in use it's pretty darn close. The chromium content is only slightly less than many harder stainless steels. It's far better than carbon steel. I wouldn't leave it wet or stored in an apple but otherwise D2 does well for me. If I were in an occupation where sweating all over the knife were a regular thing I may 2nd guess it but I would still feel comfortable giving it a chance with the expectation that some peppering may occur during the trial period to see if it's a good idea or not.

I really like D2, especially with a thin grind but fairly steep edge bevel. It holds a good edge for fibrous cutting, just like Dozier says. It will spot rust if you forget to clean blood off of it and let it set overnight, but those are easily taken out with some emery cloth... Lesson learned....

I can only carry D-2 in my pocket in the winter. Otherwise it rusts. I would like to try some friction forged D-2, but it seems to have disappeared.

Great steel, one of my favorites: Dozier K1, Cabella's Grippie, BM 710. They all cut great, hold an edge a long time. A bit of a challenge to sharpen; D2 seems to perform best with a slightly coarse edge (DMT red works well).

Love love love me some D2.

This steel is like the supersteel of yesteryear. I have a couple Brous Blades Silent Soldiers in D2 that are amazing. Many people think D2 is brittle which couldn't be further from the truth as long as it is properly heat treated.

I Had a Chris Martin (Phantomsteelworks) karambit in D2 that I gave to a friend, it sharpened well on the sharpmaker, but it took work to patina. He wanted a black blade, and it needed hours wotrh of ferric chloride before the cold blue would take. So..my experience is limited.

I wish I wouldve kept it for myself, the finger ring was wrapped in glow-I-T-D paracord. Elite AF.

Of course he pawned it for nothing years ago, what a waste..
