hey everyone, I just made a knife out of fabricated MOP and I think it looks awesome but I know there are some people who hate it. I've seen people say it's too fragile. I put it on a hunting knife and I think it looks cool on using knives.
My question is would you guys ever use it for a hunting knife
And would you guys every buy a knife with it as the handle.
I'm just trying to find out how popular it is and if I shouldn't bother using it again because no one will buy it?
Thanks guys
Paul

I use and I have used MOP.
MOP is a nice material but in my opinion isn't good on hunting knife.
It's a good material on all the knives to use with "white gloves" .... but I would not use it on a knife that is used in the field .... too prone to chipping.

When you say "fabricated MOP", do you mean true MOP? OR a synthetic MOB that might be really tough.... perhaps MOP look of Kirinite?

i think he means the acrylic/ fabricated pearl. i do not like it, it looks cool and is inexpensive. i had a bare scale fall off my workbench 3 ft to the concrete floor and it cracked in half. i do not know if all acrylic is this brittle, but i am afraid to use it now.

Thank you John, could not for the life of me figure out what the hell the OP was on about... Is it too hard to spell out "mother of pearl?" :-\

It's the fake MOP I'm talking about. Well I think the I won't use it again. It's a shame because i really liked the look and it is so cheap haha

Paul, if you like the looks of it, be sure to check how tough it really is. I'm thinking the Kirinite I mentioned is pretty tough and wouldn't be a problem.... BUT - I would like to hear other folks comments on how tough it is. I think Dr Riccardo was referring to true MOP - which while can be beautiful, not something I'd use on a hunting knife.

If you like it, who cares what other people like. Especially other knifemakers!
Now if you’re selling them, that’s a whole different story. If they stain easily from blood or chip easy in the field then they’d be bad for a hunter.
Test some out, or give a knife to a hunter friend to test for you, that’s what
I do with my knives. Can’t get much better feedback than from people that use them.

By the way, I really like the one you posted in the custom section with the hamon. :D

Ya the problem is I think it'll chip really easily. It came in a little ziplock bag with fragile written on it wrapped in bubble wrap so that's definitely not a good sign.
I do think the kirinite version looked nice as well and I'm sure it's way tougher. I'm just worried about how desireable it would be. I read a lot of people think it looks to plasticy and fake. I am selling my knives and wouldn't want to waste time using something no one wants.

I do like the look of it a lot. For a personal knife I would definitely use it but selling it I guess no one would want a knife very prone to cracking. I guess I'll have to play with it a lot and see how brittle it really is.
Thanks josh I'm glad you like it!!!

Yes, I spoke about natural Mother of Pearl. I did not really consider a material that mimics Mother of Pearl. I believe that the beauty of Mother Pearl is also in her fragility!

Frank,
I understand your point of view and I'm agree with you ... but, when you get a piece of MOP there are cracks that you see and you can eliminate and other very small ones can not be seen and make the material fragile. For fragile I mean too a material that is not desirable to strike because it has a really poor elasticity, to mean a material that is not like deer, micarta and G10 which instead have very different mechanical qualities from the MOP.
My two cent.
