Your thought on Esee 5?

I am thinking about buying esee5 and I just wanted to listen to everyone's thought on the knife.
Thanks

Its a big ole hunk of indestructible steel. I am looking for a good bush knife and the Esse 5 is a hoss. I will probably go with a Esse 4 or benchmade bushcrafter

I have one and it rarely gets used. It's a well built tank that comes with a great adaptable sheath but its weight to blade lenght ratio just doesn't add up for me. You may want to also look at Becker, Swamprat and Falkniven. All offer great knives in the 5" range.

If you do not mind the weight it is great! However, it will not well for slicing, food prep well. Because of the relatively heavy sabre grind and .250 thickness the bevel is too steep. All said if you want an indestructible knife made from good ole fashion 1095 it can do plenty of work. IMO best knife I have ever used in the 5" class for splitting 4" or under logs at the campsite. Cannot beat the price and warranty for the money. Many do not understand what a (1) Lb. knife feels like in this size range....

It is a nice sharpened pry bar but not great at being a knife. Way too thick. The 3,4,6, and laser strike are much better at cutting stuff.

Exactly my thoughts.

Its quite thick, and has a low grind as well. Those two things make it less than ideal at actually being a knife. I'd prefer any of the ones listed above for actual camp knife use (unless we're talking only battoning).

GET ONE. They're great blades, I use mean every car camping trip to build fires and such. Killer blade that will never fail you.

If it is anything like the ESEE-4 it is too rectangular to use for a long time

Otherwise it looks pretty much like my old full tang Becker 2 which is too heavy for pretty much anything

We could easily be describing a BK2, which I own....and the Esee 5 is in the mail. Sorry...I love these short beasts and they work well if you know what you're about. but.... listen very carefully to what the others are saying re weight, thickness, slicing, etc. May or may not be your.... umm... cup of steel.

It's great at being what it is: Indestructible and able to accomplish just about any task. If indestructible is required, it's golden, but if almost indestructible is close enough, then the ESEE-4 or ESEE-6 will accomplish those same tasks with a little more finesse. I took a round chain saw file to my ESEE handles and rounded them out a little bit more and they were much more comfortable.

Depends on what you want to do with the knife but its pretty much what you'd expect from a modern "survival" knife: heavy sharpened prybar
You'll have to put it through extreme abuse to get it to fail, but like all ESEEs they're tough as nails and a excellent warranty.

However, you'll have ESEEs less-than-stellar ergos and the trade-off of near-indestructibility is that its a mediocre cutting performance.
If you want a general belt knife (and a ESEE) get a 3,4, or Laser Strike would suit you better. if you want a knife that'll never fail you, get the 5

Check out all the YouTube review and comparison vids on this knife.

Also, Esee just released some bushcrafty blades at Blade 2015.... If you're into that.

I like the knife, but its quite heavy for its length. I do miss my Falkkniven A1 I traded. In fact probably going to offer the Esee 5 here soon.

I own most every ESEE made from the Candiru to the 6....and skipped the 5. My friend owns a 5, and for me, I don't get it. HEAVY, thick for a 5" blade, and not cheap. I like 3/16" thick in a blade this size and longer, (My opinion). The 6 is a GREAT blade, the 4 is a bit thick, (IMO) for the blade length. Beckers come to mind when looking for those "In between" blades compared to the ESEE's. I love Beckers.

The 5 is a monster. If you are going to regular knife tasks get another model. If you are planning or prying apart planes, cars, etc get a 5.

Depends one your style. If your a 105lbs dude the esee 5 is just obnoxious. If your a burly dude and just like smashing everything with that quarter inch stock, 1lbs of pound of 5inch power then go for it. I have a BK 2. I'm glad I finally purchased. Just don't expect it to out carve or cut better then a thinner smaller knife.
