Your thoughts: dealing 2nd hand knives support makers?

Evening boys, this is a question that I have been asking myself lately. I'm curious to see what the general consensus is. Does buying or selling a knife on the 2nd hand market support/contribute to in any way its original maker/manufacture?

I'm asking this because I recently made a couple purchases on the 2nd hand which I would not of done on the retail market because I don't wish to contribute to these guys bottom line (one of them is a collaboration I call the scumbag knife, both guys are pukes in my opinion). As a result I feel I sold out and pissed myself off a little.

On the flip side, if I want to support a particular maker, does the 2nd hand help them in any way?

Bonus: Can anyone guess the Scumbag knife? BTW, the seller was awesome and the knife is pretty nice.

I can see the logic in that. But take Hinderer, when his knives were selling for double retail it didn't impact what he charged 1st hand.

The only way buying second hand helps a maker is if you go advertising for them afterwards. But if no one asks who made it, and you don't go telling anyone then I don't see how it could have an effect on anything. Makers mostly want to sell new knives as they have no money in used ones. If I were you I wouldn't worry about it. Knives are for personal enjoyment as this is a hobby. Making knives is a way of life. But as long as you enjoy your knife it shouldn't matter who made it. I own a few knives from companies that I don't really respect much. I'm not going to not use or own a good product because I disagree with the maker on certain issues. My hobbies are where I allow myself to be selfish.

I'm guessing the scumbag knife is a strider? And if it bugs you, it won't likely stop. You'll feel better once you rid yourself of the filth lol

Lol at least you feel guilt and know the guy is scum. Even if you keep it, you're good in my book. But you'll likely get rid of it and feel relieved.

Some makers have seen what their knives are going for on the secondary market and decided to adjust their prices to that level. I never liked that philosophy, but I can respect the logic behind it.
BTW Is it a Stryfe?

The more circulation a maker's knife gets, the better it is for the maker. The secondary market creates demand. And the knife a knife nut purchased on the secondary market likely won't be the last. If a person likes a knife, he will be more likely to buy others from that maker/manufacturer. I have seen manufacturers in other areas actively discourage the secondary market only to hurt their own sales.

Other than allowing people to experience a knife, generally below retail price on the secondary market, which may spur interest in other knives from said maker, secondary market I would guess hurts makers more than it helps them.

If there is something I want, I shop for it on BF rather than buy new.

Really not trying to be judgmental, but I would not want to own a knife or anything made and/or sold by someone I considered to be a scumbag. I may own items OTHERS consider to have been made by that kind of person, but NOT by any I personally consider such. I agree with those who say you will feel better if you just get rid of it, though HOW you do so can further complicate things.

K katanas agreed you're right. Questions stands however, do I smash it to keep it out of circulation or give it to a non knife person(cousin) who will love it and likely enjoy it for what it is and not what it represents. Ignorance is bliss.

Interesting dilemma. I suggest you use it as the knife you would not use any decent knife for (if that makes any sense). Waste is not a good thing, so use it to dig or pry or test knife strength under abuse, or ??? If it holds up, OK if not, no loss. Like any intelligent person, you learned something, good for you .

Your 2nd hand purchase did not line the pocket of the maker in any way. Don't feel bad about your purchase.
Look at it like this, in a way, you stopped him from making money. Just think what would happen if all of us bought used Striders to keep money away from Mick.
