Your thoughts on Bog Oak?

I'm a Big, big fan of Bog Oak. Waaaaay back when owned a 2011 Annual with gold inlays the Bog Oak was rough and almost wicked rugged like an old fence you'd find back in the old west. However, loved the contrast between it and the smooth refined gold pins. (kick myself for letting it go 🥵). Fast forward into 2020-2021 and the Bog Oak is revisited and going strong. I see they refined it some either through selection or sanding methods but the grains are a lot less course but still have what appear in my semi-color blind eyes, rich tones of red, brown, and black. There's also rough grain strokes thicker than run opposite in different ways to the normal grain pattern. The current one I feel lucky to own is very similar in color and look to Celticrogues botton one posted above. Absolutely love it. Browsing through the other wood grains available, none ever really struck me or fit my style so to speak but the rugged richness and variance of the Bog Oak has made me a big fan and love that the wood is partly fossilized and been around for years. Who knows the exact history of where this one used to lie in some swamp in its life before becoming a centerpiece in one's collection now admired and awed over for time to come.

Who knows, maybe CRK chose it as is cheaper to farm and mass produce? 🤷‍♂️ Not sure but I sure do like it.

Well, before the large 21's were all gone, I decided to take one more plunge into the bog. ;)

To my mind, the inlays on this one have a kind of weathered bomber jacket look. I also really like the way the basketweave came out on the Damascus blade...

Nice score... 👌

Bog oak is meant to be just prior to fossilization which makes it hard. Lovely wood and feels great in the hand.

After getting outbid on a Snakewood Mnandi: I bit the bullet and ordered a Bob Oak versuion last n8ight.
Once the bidding war hit the price of a new knife: it just made sense to go to Plan B.

Sorry to hear about the Snakewood -- but, glad to hear a Bog Oak Mnandi will be headed your way (one of these days... ;))!

Thanks! Losing that knife is what got the fire REALLY started; so it was a good thing!

some bog oak (like the earlier versions) can almost look like bark mammoth ivory - but most of the time I find them a little underwhelming compared to ebony and box elder.

As the proud owner of a Large Sebenza 31 Bog Oak, I agree it is underwhelming in appearance. However, it is very cool to have a piece of wood in my possession that is thousands of years old! That is the overwhelming attraction to Bog Oak for me. Plus, there are some good deals to be had on the Bog Oak models on the secondary market.

I now have a mnandi in bog oak and a 31 with bog oak inlays. I absolutely love them. They are very different… the mnandi inlay is very light whereas the 31 is very dark.

Anyone else have a lighter bog?

I’ll add some pictures soon

I have three CRK knives below from top to bottom are macassar, bog oak, and the one I just received today box elder. I read that applying renaissance wax occasionally will help protect the inlays.

I suppose if you were lost in the woods: those inlays could work as tinder...
JK! 😆
(Actually looking for one right now!)
Yesterday Arizona Customs had a Mnandi with Bog Oak and basketweave dam. I passed on it (or the wife would have killed me), and it is probably gone, but you might want to check.
