Your thoughts on Glass Breakers for a fixed blade knife pommel?

If you're going to put a glass-breaker pommel on it, I think you need to pay attention (as others have said) to what is going to happen to the pointy bit while the knife is being used as an impact tool.

Not every knife can be used other-end-around, though. If you're concerned about being under-equipped, consider adding a dedicated tool to your kit.

If you really need to break safety glass, give the corner a little tap. You can drop a bowling ball from a bridge to center of mass, and it will bounce. Hit it in the corner, and you'll never find all the pieces.

They seem to have a very limited purpose and would not compliment a fixed blade knife. There are pens with glass breakers if one is needed.

I think window breaking hammers have a very fine point to concentrate the force.

Now, because I like dumb knives and a little bit of stirring, I'm also going to say that if you have the right knife, you can go point first, and it won't care.

...Remember if you need to break A car window, hit the corner!!!!!!
Correct.

That is what I was taught in rescue classes.

I have never seen a fireman do this in the field but, a neat trick is to cover the window with duct tape before you break it. Then you can peel the glass out as a sheet. It takes a little more time but, you don’t scatter glass all over and you have a nicer environment to work on your patient.

I've read that some newer vehicles have laminated type safety glass , even in the side windows now , like windshields have been made for a long time .

I don't think many commonly available glass breakers work very well on this type laminated glass .

If I was gonna bother with a glass breaker for serious use , I'd try to find something that would work on all of them .
Yep, much harder to get through now

I have not had glass breaker pommels requested very often on knives in general, but after hearing James Williams' explanation of why he doesn't advocate them on fighters, I tend to agree. That being said, it could still be a useful feature on a knife. What are your thoughts on glass breakers? Is there a type of knife it is best suited for? Something heavy that can hit hard, or something light that can be swung fast? Should they only be included on knives with short blade to minimize likelihood of injury to the user (since some might point the blade toward themselves in order to strike with the butt)? Should it be carbide only, or is a four faceted sharp pyramid of protruding tang sufficient? Should it be on a small knife likely to be on your person in cases where you might need to exit a vehicle in an emergency? Just looking for opinions and experience to munch on, thanks!
A rock, a tire iron, pretty much anything else except a knife is a better tool for breaking a window. Tacticlol to me.

Glass breakers on knives? Prefer not to mess with those. Swinging a fixed blade knife with a blade exposed? Not in an emergency situation unless that what the ONLY tool available. On a folder? Safer that swinging a fixed blade and I prefer fixed blades for everything, but I've seen glass breakers frequently take multiple hits to bust a windows. Not always but often enough that I prefer spring loaded center punches.

Spring punches work the first time, every time. Put that puppy in either lower corner and POP, no window. That's what I used for 30+years as a Volunteer Fireman/EMT-B and is what every other person in the fire departments around us used as well. Every fireman carried one on his/her duty belt and every fire truck had at least one velcroed to the dash.

Spring punches are cheap. $4 at Harbor Freight. $11 to $25 at Home Depot. $10 at Lowe's.

I have 3 spring loaded punches in every vehicle - 1 velcroed in the center console and both door pockets of the Camry and the Jeep and DodgeD1500. I also carry one on my utility belts in the Camry and the pickup. I also have one velcroed in the utility well on our John Deere tractor just in case I come up on a wreck while running down the road on the tractor. I probably have another 5 or 6 punches lying around that got "misplaced".

They don't matter to me on a fighting knife, but on a knife in general; I see the utility. If you have a ton of glass bottles or other glass things that you need to dispose of, pulling out your knife and safely breaking them into the waste container saves you a a lot of space and trims down how many trips you have to make to the dumpster. I know because one night I was disposing of a lot of bottles, and remembered my knife had a glass breaker on it. It was fun and easy to use, saved me several trash bags and trips to the dumpster. I don't need them, but I'm not mad if they are done well and included.
