Your thoughts on multi-angle hollow grinds?

What do the blademakers here think about multi-angle hollow grinds that I've recently seen on some tactical folders? (I'm not sure what to call it. If there's a better way to refer to it, let me know.)

Is there any real practical reason for it? (I admit I think it looks cool.)

Is this a relatively recent fad? Or has it been around and I've just missed it?

Is there one maker that can be credited with 'inventing' it, or at least popularizing it?

Two examples below from Hinderer and American Kami.

It's a compound grind. Yes there are advantages. You can have a thin ground section in the middle for slicing, while maintaining a thicker-stronger point for piercing.
And yes it looks very damn cool.
Not positive who did it first. I like Lum, Snody, Manero, Graham and Barker I would say they do some of the finest examples.

Looks similar to the grind on a katana or waki to me. I wonder if that might have been the original inspiration, although of course those are convex and not hollow grinds.
