Your thoughts on the 'definitive' working man's folder?

I'm not sure it was a throw away mentality as much as using something until it couldn't be used any more, then getting another. I'm sure we have all seen old pocket knives where the blades were worn down to needles or nubs, and couldn't be used any more.
