There are two versions without serrations the I know of. One is the original L6 tool steel mid-1960's model, the other is the S30V limited edition one they released a couple years back. The 'stub tang' shouldn't be a concern because you really oughtn't use it for batonning or anything ridiculous like that in the first place. If you do decide to pound on it, I imagine the skinny little dagger tip will snap before the tang will.
The serrated 420hc model was tested in a coldsteel video with a master tanto and a traditional tanto. It didn't do too bad and I don't think it has durability issues for what it would be used for. a Piece of the guard broke off and a big piece of the tip snapped from being stabbed into a slab of steel.
IMHO, there is really only one practical use for a Gerber MK ii. Making holes in flesh. I have one from the 80's & tried to use it for a few outdoor duties &, i'm sorry, it just is'nt the right knife for that job. It sure would put a quick end to an enemy combatant though.
I carried many of them. The serrations do two things realy well, the cut rope quickly, and the strip commo wire perfectly. That is what you will use any knife for in the field, killing is rarely done with a knife, but if you need to this will do it well.
