I don't question that contouring can make a grip far more secure. Still, for a hard thrust, I want a something that my hand will "run into", not just grip against. To make me happy a lower guard must extend outward beyond the mid-point of the index finger's thickness (say, 3/8" minimum) and it must be at least perpendicular to the blade at or beyond that point.

Is that overkill? Maybe, but it gives me 100% confidence instead of just 99%. When my well-being is on the line I want that extra 1%. :)

I hope I didn't imply overkill cause it's not what I meant. I rarely have to make hard thrusts. I am liking the responses to the question though.

No, I didn't take your comment that way. I'm just aware that my preferences are kind of out there on the pointy end of the bell curve. :)

Given a choice, I prefer a weapon that offers as many options as possible.

Production brand knives:
Al Mar Sere 2000
Cold Steel Recon1
Crawford-Kasper
Spyderco Military
SOG Recondo (Fixed blade)

I would say the Spyderco Fred Perrin I own, as first choice (those who begins to know me, should have known I was going to say that :D ), and the deep choil or ricasso, call it what you want, gives a real secure grip on the knife. I am still amazed how such a lightweight knife can perform sooo well!
Then let me go on with this list, humm I'd say:
- Chris Reeves Mark VI
- Boker Kalashnikov
- Gerber Trident
- Klotzli Walker Tactical

-Matt Cucchiara Damascus and Timascus Banshee (Still a EDC)
-Matt Cucchiara Sirocco
-Brad Duncan Ti Framelocking Aftershock
-Brad Duncan Standard Aftershock
-Microtech Terzoula

I have retooled my list and my sig line at the prompting of bquinlan.
Gerber Emerson Alliance
Emerson Barrett Knife
Brad Duncan Aftershock
Reese Weiland Nighthawk
Benchmade 9050
Ralph/Wilson Combat Stiletto

:D

Mike

greg
