Your Traditional Knife of 2017

I only purchased one knife in 2017, but have not used it. I do, however, use my precious a lot (avatar pic), so I guess this blue mini copperhead is my "Knife of 2017". It's actually prettier than my precious, but I'll still probably still carry the amber bone one. It's probably not a secret to the older members here, but maybe not known by the newer ones, but this is my favorite small EDC pattern.

Fantastic! :) I was gifted one of these knives by Barrett, and I like it a lot, in fact I have it with me today, along with my own Knife of the Year (2017)

Great pair! They compliment each other well. What one lacks the other has, vice-versa.

I considered several candidates for KotY 2017, since I tend to like most of my knives a lot; maybe my standards are too low! Here's a partial list of knives in the running.

This Case yellow Delrin pen knife certainly received serious consideration.

I discovered in 2017 that I have a preference for a pen knife set-up rather than a jack knife configuration, and the Case pen knife was perhaps the final confirmation of that preference for me. I also took possession of quite a few Case knives in 2017, and found them quite pleasant, so the Case "yeller pen" could also represent all of its Case brethren. I've used the pen knife quite a bit since I got it, but it didn't arrive until September. In the end, the fact that the Case pen knife has only been with me for 4 months eliminated the knife from the KotY 2017 contest.

Another knife that thrilled me this year is this Case CV chestnut jigged bone mini trapper.

I'm a huge fan of that series from Case, and have several patterns in chestnut jigged bone with CV steel (including 3 very generous gifts from Porch stalwarts). I also discovered that the mini trapper is SO much more to my liking as a user than the full-size trapper pattern is, and I used the mini trapper's spey blade regularly for food prep. But again, the knife was with me for less than half of 2017, so in the end I couldn't justify choosing it for KotY 2017.

After being high on my "want list" for a relatively long time, an Alox Old Cross Pioneer came into my possession in August.

I was ecstatic to finally have what I considered a "dream knife" in good condition for a reasonable price! But again, August seems too late to meet one of my major criteria for KotY.

Another KotY 2017 candidate that has taken up permanent residence in my LFP is Jack Black's SFO from A. Wright & Son, the so-called Guardians Lambsfoot.

It, and a custom slip from @Pàdruig , was a much-appreciated gift from @mrknife , and a knife with a connection to fellow BF members certainly has a "blade up" when KotY is considered. (Both my KotY 2015 and KotY 2016 were gifts.) I've never been much of a "joiner", but I'm pleased, honored, and proud to be a Guardian, and the associated lambsfoot thread is one of my favorite threads on The Porch, with what I consider to be a relatively-high signal-to-noise ratio! ;) I've also become quite a fan of the lambsfoot blade "in action". But despite all these "pros" for the Guardians Lambsfoot, I was compelled to disqualify it because it didn't arrive until late in the year. Gotta be consistent! :(

But I may never have payed much attention to the Guardians in the first place were it not for this rosewood lambsfoot, that I'm happy to present as my 2017 Knife of the Year.:cool::thumbsup:

My wife and daughter bought the knife for me while visiting York, England in the spring. (Jack Black was very helpful in making suggestions about York that I could pass on to the ladies, including a hardware store that carries A. Wright & Son knives.) I had won a knife with a lambsfoot blade in an earlier GAW, but had never gotten comfortable with the ergonomics/mechanics of the unique blade shape. But somehow it all eventually clicked when I got the rosewood lambsfoot in my hand, and I became a committed fan of the pattern and a "true" Guardian! Since Easter, this knife has been a fixture on the kitchen counter when it's not in my pocket, and I expect that to continue for the foreseeable future!
