Here’s mine. Pretty easy choice. Andy Fannin cobra knife. Fully custom, off pattern, blue g10 with ivory micarta inlaid stripes, on both sides and they line up perfectly. But, even though it’s build is great, the story is better. See, I had spoken to Andy about a few ideas awhile back, but we put it on the back burner. My wife contacted him about making a knife some time later. He said “well, I happen to have an idea”. They conspired and solidified the plan and this was the result. A birthday gift from my wife. Isn’t she great?

And, if that’s not enough, she let, well, no, actually pushed me, talked me into buying a new Shelby gt500. I have the best wife ever.

I bought the bottom knife in the first picture in January 2021. These are A.G. Russell Vest Pocket Semi Skinners. I obviously liked the pattern or I wouldn't have bought a second one. That being said, it didn't qualify as my Knife of the Year until I got it back from J jsdistin who did what I consider to be a rather challenging re-handle. Mainly because there was no template for the shield. It had to be made by hand from scratch. It seems to me that most people who have the tools and skills to do this kind of work are making their own custom knives and don't have time for a re-handle. In other words, I feel very fortunate to have found someone who could pull this off without having to pay the high price for a custom made knife.

When I saw the finished pics, I knew I would be satisfied but when I got it in my hands, I absolutely fell in love with the thing. It's 3 inches closed and it's just as sweet as it can be in person.

Hands down my KOTY for 2021.

Without a doubt my KOTY is the #86 Angus Jack, well done. It's had the most pocket time of all my traditional knives since I got it. The sheepsfoot is my favorite blade shape for day to day cutting tasks, and the pen blade is great as a secondary for piercing tasks. This knife also has the best fit and finish of any knife I purchased in 2021.

This has been a fantastic year for knives. GEC put out an incredible assortment of barlows, the 85 crown lifters were great, the 15 boys knife, 38 whittler, and the 68 run were all classics. I’ve gone back and forth on what could be my KOTY. Any of these could fit in, along with a couple Case knives and a custom sowbelly, but in the end I went with the knife I’ve carried the most this year.

A Buck 301, added to my shopping cart as an afterthought to go along with an assortment of household items from that huge online retailer. The stockman is one of my favorite patterns, and when done right it’s near knife perfection for me. The Buck 301 is a great size at 4”, but from a fit and finish standpoint this knife leaves a bit to be desired. It has numerous issues with liner and spring gaps, rough uneven grinds, a weak pull but the blades did snap closed. I was disappointed with the purchase but for the price I oiled the joints and dropped it in my pocket. That’s pretty much where it’s been since, occasionally getting booted by a new release or a night out that calls for a special carry. But it always finds a way back into the daily rotation. I think it looks a little better than the day it arrived, maybe them liner gaps have closed a bit…

2021 has been a good year for me, i bought quite a few knives. Here is the group of possibles and honorable mentions for knife of the year.20211223_094146_copy_756x1008.jpg
The forum knife has seen pocket time almost every day since i got it. The 83 is just a perfect size and feel, everytime i use it it just feels good. The penberton sees alot of use also. The stag copperhead is a glenbad recover that i had done and i have a twin for my son when ge gets older. The two stag case knives are new to me and get some pocket time too. The lloyd is just beautiful and gets carried alot but not used all that much yet. So my 2021 knife of the year is... the Hartshead Barlow! It is just perfect and i carry it and use it more than most. The way i really know it is perfect is when i sharpen it on a stone it just feels right, the way it fits my hand and the angle of the edge, it just works. A close runner up is the new to me 55 that i just got a few days ago in a GAW. This is so slim and just feels great in hand also. Have a Merry Christmas everyone! And a happy new year!20211223_094551_copy_756x1008.jpg

Great reading through the thread to see what shakes your respective trees:)

For me it has to be my John Nodder 4 blade congress I slimmed down to two (as they were stumps). Its also the first knife I've managed to do this to so has kinda imprinted on me I guess.

Old, worn in but plenty left, like myself! It's been my most used pocket go to from slicing apples/lunch to opening boxes etc. The thin blade sharpens easily and I like the ergos.
Last but not least the manicuring blade is a must have for a fastidious nail poker like myself.
Cheers all and merry crimbo.

It has been an awesome year of collecting GEC and they surely put out many awesome patterns this year. My first score of the year was Charlie’s Sepia Saw Cut Bone Barlow. All the 15 Barlow’s were great and definitely became a favorite but I never got the urge to use one of them yet.
5Nam5YU.jpg

The next pattern I got really excited about this year was the Tascosa Lockback. The first traditional knife I ever had was a small buck Lockback I was gifted by a friend. The 83 pattern hit all the right bells for me so I knew I have to go after as many of them as I could. I really wanted a pair of Bocote’s as a father/son set for when I god willing have a boy one day soon. The extra’s would either be for any other kids god blessed me with as their first knives or quite possibly a gift for my nephew one day when he’s older.
UnEPMGB.jpg

I knew when I had these that it would be my knife of the year or quite possibly my favorite pattern of all time. I didn’t use my Bocote until a few months had passed and when I finally got around to it I reaffirmed my thoughts that this is for sure my favorite pattern. For me, you can’t really know how good a knife is until you carry one in your pocket, use it, and create memories with it! I did exactly that with my Bocote and it’s absolutely one of my favorite knives ever!

Talks about the Bladeforums Barlow had already begun at this point and I was very excited for that knife and I had gotten pretty invested in it by participating in all the threads for it. When GEC announced the 2AB Barlow’s on top of that I knew I had to try and collect them all of course! When I finally managed to collect them all (had to trade for the OD Green 2AB to finish the set) without a doubt I knew the Spring Street Barlow was the best of the run and I was overjoyed to have it in my collection. The Rust Orange Bone was a close second, I really really enjoy this knife but the only nitpick I have on it is that it’s a stainless steel. The carbon steel traditional’s always feel more “traditional to me”

I really enjoyed my BF knife but just didn’t have it in me to use it, I really wanted one for the safe and one to use but we were only allowed one. The BF knife was definitely up there in my short list of favorites for 21’ but the Tascosa won in the end befause it was a knife I used and created memories with it and I donno how I can call a knife I haven’t used a favorite or KOTY.

During the Northwoods drop this year I got really lucky and picked up an Oocee Jack in 🦒, a knife that has been high on my grail list for a long while! So lucky this was one of the stragglers, I put it to use the day it arrived and carried and used it a lot! So much so that I would say it might have beat out the Tascosa! These covers are just so incredible, I absolutely love the variety of color in the bone and I really enjoy having it in the pocket to use and admire.

Through a lot of luck, patience, and just being active on the forums to be in the right place at the right time I was incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to purchase an “S” model forum knife from the extras Charlie was leftover with. Since receiving it on Dec. 7 not a single day has gone by that I haven’t had my “S” forum knife in my pocket, using it every day!

After having the opportunity to carry, use, admire, and create memories with the “S” I can without a doubt say 21’ forum knife is my, “Knife of the Year” and undoubtedly one of my favorite traditional knives of all time. What makes the forum knife most special to me is not how it ended up looking but just the process and the fun I had along the way with everyone here! I have a lot of stunning Knives but not all of them have such a great story like the 2021 Bladeforums knife.

Wow, you folks have really outdone yourselves with the posts in this year's TKOTY thread  Thank you so much for putting so much thought into them, as well as into your final decisions, the prose is excellent, and there are a host of really first rate photos too :) Well done everyone, what a great community we have here

This year is relatively easy compared to previous years. Been lucky enough to add several exceptional knives to the collection but one really stands out. This George Wostenholm Sheepsfoot jack is the perfect combination of condition, rarity and looks easily making it my knife of the year.

We are already doing this!? Seems like I just picked my 2020 knife of the year….thanks for putting this thread together Jack Black Jack Black ! One of my favorite end of the year traditions on the porch.

Another great year for collecting knives for me! It was hard to pick one. With a little thought it was an easy choice though. I picked my 85 crown lifter in natural micarta. At first I wasn’t exactly sold on the huge spear blade. But after using the knife and sharpening it I really fell in love with it. The 85 also has a really handy secondary tool as well. The micarta always looks great after some use and once it darkens up it looks great. I like the heft of the knife and it’s just a super pocketable knife.

I even had to put it to work opening up this amazing stout!

As many have already picked, the 38 English whittler was an early favorite for my koty. I was excited when they were put on the production schedule and even more so when then announced that it was going to be a warncliff main blade. I was so pleased with the knife that I carved this gnome and gifted it to Mr. Howard at the rendezvous.
Wh9Ag1u.jpeg

However at the rendezvous while waiting in line Saturday morning I was told that there were SFA 62 pocket carvers leftover due to the pandemic. My interest was peaked, unfortunately they were all sold by the time my number was called. As I looked around at the other options I was approached by a man I had never met before, but he knew me. He knew I carved, he had the last pocket carver in hand. He saw that they were selling out and I had not gotten a chance to get one. So he had it pulled out to "buy" himself, what he was actually doing was holding it for me. Thank you again, Nathan Denning. The story doesn't end there though. The 38's blade is still thinner than the 62's direct from the factory. I had heard of others getting regrinds on some of their carving knives and was curious if this would be a good idea for the pocket carver. I made the leap of faith with a 1 of 11 SFA knife and sent my new knife off to Tom Krein. Well it is a decision that I will never regret and vaulted this yellow camel bone double shielded 1/11 SFA to KOTY status. I carry it daily and carve with it all the time, it will take a special knife for me to put it down.

Hi,

Easy choice for me.

This year I moved to the new country, had to leave 99% of my collection. At some point hobbies were put on hold.

But luckily here I met very nice knife community. So, knife collecting switched to another gear.

I asked myself what traditional knife do I miss most. And it was obviously Case Peanut. I was extremely happy to get Red Stag Peanut for Christmas from my family. Now it’s always in my pocket.

Here it is, my KOTY

That is nice!!! We all managed to get some nice ones during the Rendezvous even from trades. Randy had saw i was disappointed leaving with 2 86s on the last day and offered me the smooth white bone he grabbed!

Thanks again to Jack Black Jack Black for this great thread each year.
This was really pretty easy this year. My KOTY is the Voss USA Jack knife I discovered in my old tackle box that my dad got me when I was a kid. He used also. This tackle box has sat for almost 45 years without a thought that a knife like this would be in there. Great thing is after cleaning it up, it is just a wonderful knife with great walk & talk. A joy to carry. Special of course because it was my dad's even though he does not remember how he got it (he's 96).
