3 finger fixed blade, O-1 HRC 59, burl wood scales and hand sanded finish with brass pins.

I had put handles on a couple of bought blades before, but this is the first one I made all of myself.
Hand files and wet-n-dry stock removal from 5mm thick 01. Guard and handle bolts of brass and cocobolo slabs. Blade is 8" long.

My first one.

Full tang hunter 1095/nickle damascus blade.
3-1/4" blade length - 8" total length
Nicklesilver bolsters
Mammoth bone and spalted maple handle
Brass and Mosaic pins.

The mammoth bone was extremely thin, so it is supported form the underside by 1/8" thick brass under the mammoth bone only. The spalted maple has a nice leathery look and feel.

I like this thread, especially because I'm currently working on my first. Seeing so many really good looking knives as firsts gives me something to work towards.
Keep them comming, they are great.

i appreciate you guys posting eh. For these being first knives they are wicked. Hopefully when i finish mine it will turn out decent. I'm currently just trying trying to learn how to do proper file work and get better. I have to say file work looks a whole lot easier said than done. I got time so i might as well make the knife that i really want to make. take care and i appreciate the pics of your first knives eh. It gives me a kick in the pants to get mine done soon.

All of these firsts look better than my first one. I do believe the forums are very helpful. Mine belongs to a good friend and still gets used. I should borrow it for a picture.

OK the Khukri style knife is actually the second knife I ever made, 36 years ago when I was 12. Its been well used and re profiled a time or two. 5160 steel (leaf spring) worked cold and kept at the spring temper.
The hawk is the first tomahawk I made about 3 years ago, forged, but still leaf spring.

Okay, now I'm depressed. I was so proud of my first knife but WOW, some of these are just plain awesome for first knives.

Just kidding on the depressed part, seeing great knives just inspires me. It also increases my projected budget for machinery but inspires me nonetheless. :-)

I hate to see you feeling depressed about your first knife and all so here is my first knife. Looks curiously like a hacksaw blade. Very flexible.

Really, I made this thing when I was a kid(early teens) because I needed a fillet knife. This has a handy hook extractor too. :D

But, alas, this was my first adult stock removal knife. Sorry. :o

What helped me get through the filework was making the marks with a super fine sharpie, and measure out your depth and spacing with a micrometer caliper. Both on depth down the side and across the spine. As long as you measure you spacing and grind depth, and TAKE YOUR TIME, you will not screw up. Heres my first attempt at filework. Oh yea, do it BEFORE you HT.
