YouTube video reviews?

i made one about the field knife. its one of the few I see floating on the YT. i am about to do one for the LC just so people who aren’t on BF get exposed to something new.

I've never given any knives to a YouTube reviewer. I probably should.

If you are looking to increase your brand awareness, then yes I think you should. Of course being selective is important, there is more junk on YouTube than there is quality. Unless you are also planning to significantly scale up production, the only affect will likely be to increase secondary market prices.

I think, Nathan, that you usually feel no problem not knowing what the outcome of the review would be, IF you had a very good background on the reviewer and knew for a fact he was 1) a true expert on knives, 2) understood the machining and machinery aspect, 3) and you had absolute trust that he or she was acting in a totally objective manner without hidden agenda.

Otherwise, I would hate to hand my own personal reputation and fate to anything but a good friend. JMHO. I would never trust social media to that extent, ever.

I agree with some of this, but not all of it. I'm not sure if you are implying that he should give a good friend a product to review, but if he did the review would have to be considered biased. 1) How do you define a true expert on knives? I think many people have different uses for their knives, and a specific knife may or may not be good for that use; regardless it could be valuable information to know. 2) I don't think that a reviewer would need to understand the machining of a knife in order to give a good review of it. What matters is how the product is capable of performing after it is made.

I think that once brand awareness increases, many people will start to review the product, regardless if they know what they are talking about or not, and regardless if they were given the product for free or not. As consumers we have to always wade through a bunch of misinformation to find the truth in things, that is no different here. In a day and age where everybody walking around has a camera and a video camera in their pocket, there is very little way to control the flow of information, but overall a quality product will show as such, and I'm certain that's the case with CPK.

I don't disagree with some of this, because I disagree with all of this, lol. But "regardless if they know what they are talking about or not" kinda says it all - IMHO. No offense intended, naturally.

Any more "brand awareness" and no one will be able to grab one of CPK's quality pieces. But that, of course, is all up to Nathan.

I did a destruction test of a FK and for anyone interested in watching the whole thing, it is more than enough to convince them that Nathan's knives are spectacular. For me, the FK is a knife I will have until that fateful day that my number comes up.

Maybe there are some people out there who really do care that a knife be able to shave hair off a flea's butt, but I don't think there are very many true knife affecionados who care. Additionally, there is a lot of subjectivity in most "reviews" and there are also a lot of cross-comparisons between different knives. Again, as a knife-nut, I do not care about these things at all. I have decided for myself based on my experiences, needs, and desires and haave no desire to sift through reviews wondering if the reviewer has a hidden agenda, knows what she is talking about, is including all of the relevant information, etc., etc., etc. To me, sending a knife off to a "reviewer" to get a review is a waste of good steel. :D

If this forum had a facepalm button I’d be pressing it so hard right now. :D

What about the review/unboxing videos? Nothing better than watching a fifty year old man open a box!! Sometime they like the box some times they don't and on and on.. When I'm just trying to learn something about a product.

If it is possible to put out lengthy videos using an IPOD, I could this spring. If I know how. I'm not great with computer stuff. It wouldn't be abuse test though, just performance.

The only videos I've ever cared to watch about a CPK are the ones Nathan himself posts.

Then came the testing-to- failure video that on_the_edge did. That was fantastic, and maybe we could find it and make it a sticky.

I recall Nathan even taking the time to explain why the edge chipped - after the blade was batonned sideways through a hardened washer!!

The fascination for me is the steel, the heat treatment and the engineering and science that has been mastered by the maker, along with HIS explanations that he shares here.

No 'tube reviewer will EVER do these knives justice. Not. Even. Close.

Said better than I could say it, and I 100% agree.

I think it's important to form the message yourself. I've been looking around a little bit, and most of these guys' opinions about how well a knife works or how well it's made seem to be pulled right out of their ass

I'm gathering some momentum to produce a little video on each knife that gives a clear and concise scope of expectations regarding why the knife is what it is

or...maybe we'll do some cold steel style videos. Anyone care to lend me a tie and a beer belly?
