You've defended yourself, what now?

with the knife ( or other weapon ).
I'm probably going to have a drink to try and calm down. I'll probably throw up because of the incident and try to have another drink.

This is going to change your life no matter what you do. You didn't ask for this change. You are still alive to deal with the changes. The BG brought the changes to his now ended life upon himself. All you did was modify his life, while allowing yours to be changed and not ended. I don't think there are a lot of moral what-ifs to sort through.

Maybe it's just me, but I can see them making an example out of the white boy with a knife. I really don't want to put myself or my family through an ordeal with a legal system that I don't have a whole lot of faith in. Lawyers cost lots of money.

I'm going home and taking my chances. Maybe I will be looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life, but I still have that life. Maybe after a few months I would even start sleeping again.

Get the he!! out of Dodge! You can always say you got scared and ran away! Don't render aid, that is insane. Think about it, are you really going to patch up a BG's severely bleeding slash and puncture wounds he recieved from you and your blade?! I would throw up if I had to do that. JUST LEAVE!!! If a camera catches the action it also caught the initial assault! American culture does not always see the knife as a legitimate defense arm, so don't count on the DA/jury's mercy without spending a lot of money on defense attorneys. The cops usually won't go out of their way to catch someone that killed a criminal in Self-Defense unless it turns into a high-profile case.

I once knew a co-worker who stabbed someone outside a bar in SD and the jury found him innocent but he said it was a horrible experience. The stabbed guy, who was a bully but not really a criminal, lived but he spent some time in the hospital. On the other hand, a few years ago in San Francisco they found a body in an alley of someone that got stabbed while trying to rob someone. It didn't appear the cops were in a hurry to find the criminal-killer. NO ONE CARED!!!

"They" say if you ever kill someone in self-defense that you can expect to spend at least $10,000 on legal fees regardless of how right you were. Most DA's will investigate you whether they ultimately press charges or not. During that time you would, of course, be a moron not to pay a lawyer to save your hide. Of course this says nothing of the expense you'll incur during the wrongful death lawsuit the bad-guy's family will undoubtly bring at you.

Would I run? Doubtful. I'm sure I'd still be busy puking by the time the cops showed up. That's yet another reason why I'll always try to talk my way out of a bad situation, or even, yes, turn tail and run if I have to. My family and my life are much more important to me than my pride.

Two cents from Al.
