I was able to fulfill a lifetime dream this summer by driving the Alaskan Highway and spending 6 weeks in the Yukon and Alaska.

My wife and I drove into a native fishing camp thinking we might be just going into another tourist trap but found an authentic camp where the natives are still fishing with wooden traps and smoking their salmon over open fires.

I was talking to the gentleman who was showing us around when we discovered that we both made knives. I asked to see his work and he said he only had one knife available because he lost one recently. I had a few of mine along and he kept looking at the one with a moose antler handle. I gave him this one to replace the one he lost.

I have also included a photo of an adz that the natives make from a tree limb and a car spring. I am going to make one of these when I get home in case I might want to carve a totem pole or hollow out a log for a canoe.

Sounds like a great trip!!

Man. Great post Gerry. I love the guard on his knife. (Yours are always fantastic, as you know.)

I really miss Alaska. Wasn't it crazy how close the wildlife would get to your car on the alcan?
