yuppies getting into living off the land

Yuppies? I read the article and most of the examples cited are "Boomers", if they must be labeled in some way such as this. What is your personal definition of "Yuppie" anyway? ...and what the heck is the "yuppie movement"???

Agreed. In a couple of recent threads, it seems like "yuppie" is being used as a pejoritive for city people. In any case, it's clearly inappropriate here.

The whole article is borderline inappropriate: "The exact number of people taking such steps is impossible to determine, but anecdotal evidence suggests that the movement has been gaining momentum in the last few years."

It's a filler. A New York Times article? Barely. It's entirely reprinted from the Associated Press. Internet link? Peak oil. Some AP reporter had an off day and an article to write, logged into a catastrophist website, and let his imagination take over from there. No facts & figures on how many people and where. And the "movement" he's talking about is a movement back to the land, not a yuppie movement at all.

Bladeforums has a policy, more strictly enforced is some forums than others, that an original post should contain a reasonable amount of though-process on the part of the poster. This would have avoided a few of these pitfalls, instead of a link and a quick misdefinition.

Don't you know it's a NEO-CONspiracy?

maybe just maybe the yuppies of yesteryear are the boomers of today. is there a time limit on yuppeiism? when does one convert from yuppie to boomer, is it possible to convert or is one eternally condemned to drink double lattes and make the twice daily pilgrimage to starbucks.

sheesh,

Of course, remember the Y in Yuppie stands for young.

Since this is no longer a serious discussion, if it were ever meant to be, perhaps I should move it to Whine & Cheese ... ?

We invite you once again to define "yuppie". Hint: the original designation preceded Starbucks national presence by some years.

I'll admit to being of the generation that coined the term "Yuppie". It was from the early 1980's and was part of the the Reagan years.

A big part of the definition of being an original "Yuppie", was that you had to be earning twice your age in salary. Doesn't mean as much nowadays.
