I have just learned through TKC-L that Yvon Vachon passed away about 1 1/2 weeks ago. He was an exceptional talent, and will be sorely missed. :(
 
He will be missed. He always was ready to talk to people about his work and was constantly putting out some extreamly creative knives, especially evident in his award winning minuatures.

Definitely, he was one of the best miniature knife makers in the world.
 
Yvon was a great guy and an unmatched talent. he will be missed.

I was thinking last night how nice a fellow he was the first time(and subsequent times) that I met him.
 
Thank you Brian for the unfortunate news. Yvon was a wonderful person and an incredible talent. I remember about 8 years ago communicating with him on a miniature "Champion" Swiss Army Knife that he was going to make that was to be 1" long closed with ALL the tools of a regular "Champ", (can you imagine?). He offered it to me for $550.00 and I declined because at the time I didn't have the spare cash. I've been kicking myself ever since. It is the "king" of my "one that got away" stories. In my mind he was the premier miniature maker of all time.

What! The miniature "Champion" Swiss Army Knife for $550! Damn I would have bought it in a second. I saw that miniature selling for $3000!
 
I only met Yvon at the Solvang Shows. What a talent, he had for making miniatures. His work was of the highest level. He will be sorely missed by the knife community. And not forgotten.

Oh man, all my normal pissant BS aside...damn!

We met Yvon at the Solvang show back in April...what a nice guy!

My wife loved his miniatures, and they had a great time talking knives there at the show...

Oh man, that's bad news, sorry to hear it guys. :(

Well, the upside is that he was one of the best, and his work will live on..."All the world's a stage"

I'm sure that as long as we live, his memory will live with us!

My hope? 40 years from now, when I'm 80, and I see Yvon's work at a knife show somewhere...my wife at my side, we'll remember the time we met him, and the laughs we shared.

Wow!!! Shocked to hear the news. I was just thinking of him while at the NY show yesterday. He used to come but hadn't been there the last couple of years. He was a nice guy and did beautiful work. He was a young man. Does anyone know what he died of?:(
 
Only talked to him at the Solvang shows...a tremendous talent...and certainly a contributor to setting a new standard for miniatures!!

Truly missed by many I'm sure!

BTTT. Still shocked and bummed out by the news. Does anyone know what happened?:(
 
It would appear that after an arguement with his wife. After which she called the police.

He committed suicide.
 
:( What a sad story. What a terrible waste of life and talent. Both Yvon and his wife used to attend the NY show. She is a beautiful woman who seemed very friendly and helpful. Ditto for Yvon. I wonder what it would have taken to prevent this terrible tragedy. Yvon is not the first knifemaker who took his own life. The list includes John Nelson Cooper, Kent Draper, and, I'm sure, others. Is it the "artistic temprament"? Each had his own unique situation and reasons for doing what he did. The sadness, loss, and hopelesness was common to all. :confused: :(
