Yvsa resurrects a 20 inch Sirupati. Pix.

I'm interested, Yvsa!

I never had too much of a chance to test the knife's edge as I opted to test the tang first. Do you think it is softer than some of the other shop 2 blades?

Funny, I was wondering if it would be possible to go for a solid buttcap too...

Are the two screws in addition to the tang intended to keep the buttcap from loosening and twisting?

Dave, as I recall that blade was right up to HI standards.

The screws are to do what you indicated. If Yvsa gets a quarter inch plate on that handle with two set screws there will be no loose buttcap -- ever. And you can use the cap for hammering. Better than new and guaranteed for ten lifetimes.

I have one of those small Black and Decker grinders with the small dia.motor from Wal-Mart.I think it runs about 3,600 RPM.
I have a grinding wheel on one side and a 6" dia.close sewn buffing pad on the other.I use a grey compound on the pad and it works pretty well for about everything..I can even polish steel with it without to much difficulty.

The horn is a little tricky. You have to use quite a bit of compound and get the horn on and off the pad fairly quick or it will burn and leave a brown spot.
A little practice will make anyone profiecent in a short time.It does a really nice job on all of the Kuhkuri.

Another thing I have noticed with the buffing wheel is that it brings out any grain or color that might be there unnoticed otherwise.

Dave:
The only thing different about this blade is that the from the very point about 1" back toward the handle is hard. It will chop my nails without any deformation.
Then about 2" or so it is what the point should be and will deform when chopping my nails.
It would appear about like the one test you did.
Then it goes back to hard again.
I think it may be a tad softer than the "Super Blades",but not by much.
The point itself is "Super Blade" hard.
I will know more when I get ready to
poish and sharpen the blade for the final test just before And After the handle goes back on.
It is like Uncle says "up to H.I. standards."
I think it may be a tad better overall.

Thank you both for the info.

I was just curious about the hardness because I don't think I ever even bothered to sharpen the blade. It came pretty sharp and I just gave it a couple licks with the butcher's steel.

Has your cousin the welder had a look at it yet, Yvsa?

Dave:
I will call him this evening.I am glad you didn't sharpen it!!
It was plenty sharp enough and I have dulled the edge and the point with a file to protect my cuz.The one he has bit him and that's one reason I knew it was his.

I am assumeing you want this one back?

It will be better than new if I can get it that way.I wll do my best to find the brass.I am going to shoot for some about 5/16" thick as that should last forever if someone wanted to pound on it.
I will see about polishing the edge up as well as the blade.
You will be well satisfied I think.

An interesting note. This 20" Sirupati has a bigger handle than my 18" AK.
My handle is 1.010 thick and this one is 1.187 thick.

Uncle Bill:
This one is going to be interesting.

I thank you again for letting me be a part in the resurection of these blades. It is good to see them come alive again.

What about the screws for the butt caps providing I can find some
brass?
I am thinking "Phillips Head" and Stainless Steel wood screws with a pan head. I think that's what the rounded top heads are called anyway.
Do you think the flat head ones would be better?
I will get them as long as it is feasible, probably about 1 1/2".That should let them have a good grip with the epoxy around them.
I am kind of like the Kamis in that,"Bigger is better."

Yvsa, I would opt for flat head screws with a countersink in the buttcap to give a uniform flat surface. This would make the cap better for use in hammering. But it is your project and you do it the way you think best.

Dave has a replacement already but he may want to trade back when you are finished. It is his choice.
