Damn man, you're such a nice and kind person.
Without getting too far off topic, I am just happy to be in a position to help spread the joy of high quality knives to long time friends of mine that otherwise might not get to know them. This thread helped me to think through a gift "out loud" with a bunch of fellow knife knuts.

Unless gifting to a knife person, I’d only give something highly stain resistant. If he’s someone that understands and appreciates ZDP for what it is, yeah, it would be an awesome gift.

I bought a Chaparral for my son, but wound up not giving it to him due to the reported stain potential of XHP (even though I’ve never had a problem with it).

For a non-knife person, a mainstream stainless would be best, imo. Anything from VG-10 or the 154’s, up to 20cv or magnacut.

Someone sells a Delica and Endura in 20cv (Knifejoy?). Spyderco Salts can be had in LC200n (which is easy to maintain) or even magnacut (Native). The Dekka in any steel offered would be a great choice too.

Had lunch and met up yesterday. Ended up sending the ZDP Endura with him, and he seemed pretty happy. As far as being a knife person, he has carried and used knives for a long time and understands how to take care of non-stainless steel, and actually prefers it, he just might not spend a lot on "tools" he's not actively using for work. As far as the sharpening issue, it was a recurve blade that needed to be touched up, and I understand the challenge they present. I actually broke out my Sharpmaker and used the corners instead of the flats and had it shaving again. Though in discussion, he at least lurks knife forums also if he doesn't post, so I'm not entirely he hasn't (or won't) eventually see this post.

I gotta vote Magnacut. It's just so much more forgiving than ZDP in almost every way. If anything, you'd be doing yourself a favor if you're going to end up sharpening it. I don't enjoy sharpening the crazy hard stuff when it's my own knife, let alone doing it for someone else.
