For the knife steel knuts out there. This is a question for someone that knows blade steel more then me.What would be a better steel zdp-189 or cpm s90v for folding knives?.By the charts that I've read zdp has a higher carbon and vandium whould that make it a better steel.?I also heard zdp takes a razor edge and holds it, while s90v won't hold a razor edge but will hold a dull edge forever.

facts pls.
thx gine.:confused::jerkit::D:thumbup::)

I'll vote zdp. If only for the fact that no one runs S90v at 65+rc because it would be far too brittle to be of any use. The only advantage s90v may have over zdp is in wear resistance, but I suspect that even if it both were run at the same hardness zdp would be very close, and with it being as hard as it is there is no contest.

It would be very close like ATS-34 and 154-CM. After reading up on the subject, I agree with Yoda.

What is the s90v spyderco military rockwelled at 61-63?

I wish they made a zdp version.:(:o

Honestly with a blade like the military I'd be more interested in a tougher steel, like H1 or M2, maybe even 3v

I would go with ZDP-189, very wear resistant with high hardness.
CPM S90V has very high wear resistance, but average hardness.

For every day stuff you probably wouldn't notice any difference. The only reason I prefer ZDP-189 is that I can thin the edge down a lot more than most steel types.

I'm planing to buy Endura ZDP-189 ( plain edge). I have Eze-Lap Diamond stone (Fine: 600) will it cut ZDP ? I have also Triangle with ultra-fine stones but they are far away...

I thought that I read somewhere that Sal said zdp was Japanese and S90V was the American version. So aren't they the same?

You must have read wrong, they're absolutely different, he may have meant that s90v was the closest thing we had to it over here in terms of performance.

Yes, Zdp will even be sharpenable on soft natural stones, it's just that it will be really slow. My advice is to touch up the edge as soon as it looses shaving sharpness(or even sooner), if you do that touchups will only take a minute or so.

It's great, just remember that prying with steels of this nature (extremely hard, very high wear resistance) is not recommeneded laminated or not.

The diamonds will cut any steel, no matter how hard it's run. I do almost all my sharpening on diamond hones, including ZDP-189, D2 and 440V. The fine grit just means it will take longer ;)

Thanks yoda I dont pry with my knives anyway thats what pry bar or screwdriver is for.
At least to me. I know you guys like REALLY use your knives. Nothing wrong with that, I just use a different tool.

It's just that I would be hesitant to do any sort of prying with a zdp blade, like removing large staples from a box or something that I wouldn't think twice about doing with something like AUS-8a. I've heard that the edge is quite durable(aside from being wear resistant), I haven't heard many reports of chipping at all including some folks who hit staples cutting boxes open.

S90V is the stainless equivalent to the CPM10V (ask Phil Wilson, noted custom knife builder, about this fact, it's one of his, if not his, favorite steels on most of the blades he builds).

Takes an incredible edge and holds it for a very long time. Unlike ZDP 189, S90V can take a much thinner edge without fear of the micro-chipping that has occasionally occurred with ZDP189. It's performance is very much like ZDP189 (Sal mentions this fact in one of his posts on the forum). It would be hard to pick one over the other in my book but not having access to the S90V frequently enough, I'd hold out for the S90V. I also can't wait to get my hands on one of these Mili's despite having 2 in S30V which love dearly and actually prefer over the BG42 edition.
