Just picked up an Endura 4, ZDP-189 and noticed that it seems to stain very easily. Is this common with this steel?

I tried to clean with some metal-glow but didn't seem to help much.

If this steel stains this easy, do you suppose it would take to a cold bluing or would it come out "patchy" looking?

Don't know about the cold blueing, but I can confirm the rust issue.

A few hours in the pocket on a warm day an there are rust spots.

But you can rub them off, so no problem there, and on the plus side, you have one heck of a hard steel :-)

so don't mind the little rust spots and use the hell out of this fine knife :D

My ZDP Delica stained pretty easily after cutting some food and then waiting a while before washing the knife. However, I used some Flitz and the stains came right off. I'm not really familiar with metal-glow - maybe try some Flitz metal polish? I don't mind the stains now that I know they can be removed easily.

autosol works. or use a contact cleaner (the solvent they use to clean contact points / connections, it's like WD40) and brush clean.

yes, it stains. I'm wondering how come the Japanese / William Henry advocate its use in the kitchen? how do they get round the staining issue...?

Is it stain, or a patina like carbon steel does?

It is more of a patina.

I believe its just one of those steels which look great after a year or so, but like all new knives its that first stain, nick, scratch etc that just stands out until it has that well used look & feel.

I tried to cold blue it to speed it along, but I stopped after the first coat. It seemed to take it pretty well, but I couldn't be sure how well it would turn out...I wiped off what I put on with some metal-glow paste, I'll just wait and let it happen by itself. :)

That sounds like a winner! I like the idea of letting it get that natural coloration that comes with use. I don't have one with the ZDP blade - but will pick one up when I find a 'user' just to test it out. Thanks!

Well, that is just another reason (excuse) why I like VG10 better. I have a Calypso Jr(2 ea), a Kershaw, in ZDP and I usually don't carry them.
First I have an issue with the lam line now I do see a stain, on one that I can't get out. Thank God for VG10.

Laminated? I'd forgotten 'bout that! But isn't there one that is not laminated, but all ZDP?

The Delica / Endura are solid ZDP if U want.

Jess Horn / CalyIII CF are laminated.

The Stretch II will be solid ZDP.

Then there's variant of Caly Jr. (EDIT: Now I think it is laminated, like the Caly III....)

Im sure i missed something. Correct me, guys.....
