What steel will hold a better edge for general cutting.

zdp 189 or sg2??????

I can't find anything on sg2.

Please help me????

Since I'm assuming you're not actually making a knife with the steel...they're both high wear resistance PM steels that are close enough that you should choose between the two based on which knife you'd rather buy.

I agree, it would be a tough call.

Personally I would give ZDP-189 the edge due to it's higher Rc rating, but that's just nit-picking really.

I own both steels and although I confess I have never lost the edge on either I will say they both seem to take about the same effort to strop and maintain the edge. They both take more work than any of my other steels but both seem to take about the same effort. I have not torture tested either blade(s) though. I could be way off base on this but the SG2 may seem a smidgeon finer grained but that could be a mirage too.

Ok thanks guys I will end up with a stretch 2 or JYG sg2 by the end of this weekend.:)

Lets complicate this - does anyone have experience with CPM 110V? I see Kershaw will be using it on a sprint-run Shallot.

Kershaw has an exclusive contract for introducing the steel. That being the case, only the people at Kershaw have any experience with it. We can speculate by looking at composition charts, but beyond that if you pick up one of those S110V Shallots you'll be one of the first to use the steel.

Well I have Kershaw's with ZDP-189 in flat grind, SG2 in hollow grind, and S30V in flat grind
.....my Fav overall is the SG2 on my Blur, because of the hollow grind and SpeedSafe.
I like the ZDP steel better because it holds a sweet edge forever (on my MiniCyclone.)
The S30V is more similar to the SG2 and very simply put ... IT'S AMERICAN !!
As "Larrin" stated ...
'you should choose between the two based on which knife you'd rather buy'
he is dead-on right. I bought all three and solved the problem that way.

I got my first taste of ZDP-189 with the new Shallot CB (man Kershaw is pumping out the Shallots as of late!), and I like it :D

ZDP189 much much better then SG2. SG2 is around AUS8 and actually Sandvic 13C26 shows better result then SG2 even CRKT MI AUS8 shows better results on my tests. I tested both JYDII and JYD2 Ti/SG2, with 3 time cheaper regular JYDII did better job:

Thanks, Vassili.

SG2 can take a keaner edge then zdp-189.I can't seem to get a hair whittling
edge on my stretch 2,but that could be because the flat grinds aren't centered and i'm using a sharpmaker not freehand ,so I can't compinsate for
the angle differences.Sg2 is one of the finest and purest grain steels out their
and is why you can get such a true razor's edge. The sanvick steels are also
have a fine grain structure and sharpen up nice as well, can't wait to try the new sandvik that kershaw interducing in the coming months.

Stretch 2 should be able to easily whittle hair. Even with a sharpmaker, as long as you're hitting the edge.

I see no difference in whittling hair with ZDP189 as well as with SG2 or any other steel.

Thanks, Vassili.

Hair whittling seems to be more a matter of the sharpening technique rather than the steel. Especially if we're talking about modern steels from popular knife companies.

There is barey an edge on one side of my stretch 2, and a huge edge on the other side.I'm using the 30 digree setting on my sharpmaker the flat grinds are off kilter,is that my problem??.My emersons get razer sharp and the grinds aren't the same.I'm leaning towards heat treat
problems at this point.I've sharpened many different steels on dozens of folders.I also am following my freinds advise using light pressure when using
zdp.I have never run into this problem with a spyderco.I may send it in. I'll give it one more go when my head cools.:mad::mad::confused::o:(

I guess it's more of a level of ease then the blade steel itself. But i'm damn sure sg2 could become sharper then 420j2 for example.
