ZDP isn't that tough...

Abuse of a tool is just that. When the abuse results in damage it does not then serve as proof of a short coming in the tools design nor material. ZDP is a very hard (brittle) blade steel. At 20* inclusive the blade edge would be particularly vulnerable to chipping if introduced into duty such as punching into metal.
I have always found "can openers" to be quite useful for such purposes however, they make for lousy tape and rope cutters ;).
I think for cutting and general "knife" duties one will find ZDP to be quite adequate in the category of Toughness.

Honestly? I think your knife did very well all things considered. Given how ridiculously acute that bevel looks, you're lucky you didn't break the edge off entirely.
For opening cans, might I suggest 1095 at Rc 57?

im willing to bet that if i added a secondary bevel (micro bevel) or ran the edge at 25-30 degrees per side, the ZDP would have done even better (possible not even chipped during the test). im very happy with what the knife did, i did better than i expected.

p.s. i much prefer using a can opener ;).
