Just when I thought I had enough Endura 4s I noticed the E4 with a ZDP189 blade and am considering adding one to my "rack" of E4s. However, I have heard this is ZDP189 is pretty hard and am wondering how hard it is compared to M2.

Among my stuff is a BM710 with an M2 blade which isn't too bad to sharpen with a diamond hone, but the edge bevel has been thinned down considerably. Even so, it is fairly unresponsive to a leather strop.

Therefore, I am wondering if ZDP189 is in the same category when it comes to stropping, honing, etc.

It depends on how they are heat treated, ground, etc. Overall they are very good steels. M2 is known for a biting edge. ZDP is known for extreme strength and edge retention at higher RC's than typically possible. They are both good steels with the edge going, IMO, to ZDP. ZDP takes as good an edge, holds it longer, scratches less, and for sure rusts less. Don't use either for prying or bending lateral or twisting forces. I like both but consider the ZDP a better knife steel. M2 is better for planers and other jobs where heat builds up. It is designed for "red" hardness. Joe
