Zebra Damascus

I have never heard of these particular patterns except your friend may be referring to twist. Check out the following site. It is Jim Hrisoulas' pattern welded steel.

Click on "Pattern Welding".

He has no recollection of hearing the terms before either but a customer has asked for prices on either of the two patterns. I guess that the only route is to go back to the customer and ask for clarification.

I have only got involved because Mel is busy as all get out with the harvest right now.

i sounds like he's talking about twist damascus, try showing him some pictures and see if he can pike it out.

Butterfly Damascus is mentioned in Jim Hrisoulas' book "The Pattern Welded Blade." On page 39 there is a photo and a description. (Looks like the same photo as on the Salamander web page.)

The Butterfly pattern is a varaiation on the ladder pattern. Instead of cutting "rung" grooves into the billet, you cut X shaped grooves. Then flatten the billet, and forge to shape.
