Zero Tolerance 0392 rattling. Detent ball?

I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. My 0392 has a distinct rattling sound. It sounds like it comes from the detent ball, but I'm not sure if that even CAN rattle. I made sure all my screws are tight, etc. but the sound remained. Because I don't trust myself to mess with a nice knife I went ahead and sent it to Kai so hopefully it will come back fixed. I just wanted to see if others had experienced this with their 0392? My concerns was the detent ball falling out assuming that is possible.

it was most likely the stop pin for the closed position. They are usually slip fit and can bounce from one side to the other. A dab of grease in one of the holes it sits in can eliminate the noise.

Thanks Purple. I did notice the stop pin was loose, as I had other ZTs with loose stop pins, but when I stabilized the stop pin the noise was still present so I don't believe that is the issue. I could be wrong though but I suspect ZT will correct any issue it may have.

Well then i only have one other guess. If i remember correctly that bearing system uses a brass retainer to hold the bearings instead of zt using their usual blue retainer. In some cases those retainers for the bearings move independently from the bearings and can have a slight rattle. I have a few knives that can make noise from the bearing system but its usually when the blade is moving. Either way, i agree that zt will sort it for you.

I've taken mine apart before, and it is the bearing. The retainer is actually steel. I hear the rattling on both my 0392 and 0392 bwbrz.
Not a good image of the bearing, but you can sort of see.

Knife rattles huh😦 you guys have good ears 👍🏻 when does it rattle ?

Thanks Jason. I'm not worried if there is no functional issue at play. And bigmark408, I concur with Jason. I kind of just noticed it taking it out of my pocket a few times and wondered what it was, so I shook it and sure enough it was there. I should have greased the pivot before sending it back to Kai I suppose. Oh well, no biggie.

After spine whacking it, I put it on the exchange for $500 and made more money than when I bought it. :playful:
