Zero Tolerance 0400

The onslaught has a much thinner blade than the ZT series. You'd be able to pry just fine with an 0400 with its reinforced tip, not so with the onslaught.

Gunk in the axis lock won't make that knife happy either. It also has smooth G-10 -- not conducive to a solid grip.

Lastly, BM has a silly warranty. Zero Tolerance has a no-BS policy.

Yeah I was about to reply about the blade thickness. I'm just deciding now between the ZT 0400 and the Entrek strike point mk2. http://www.bladehq.com/item--EnTrek-USA-Strike-Point--7643

anyone have any experience with this?

The onslaught is almost certainly tougher due to its sheer size/thickness and its axis lock. But honestly, these are both extremely tough knives and I wouldn't worry at all about the reliability of the 0400. It's not really a fair comparison due to the size difference though. You'd do better to compare the MUDD to the Onslaught in overall toughness. The MUDD is a total beast. Even then, however, I'd bet on the Onslaught.

The issues you should focus on for your decision are the blade shape (the 0400 has a really radical blade shape, which I love personally but many hate), handle materials, which lock do you prefer, is assisted opening important to you and which do you think looks best. And, of course, will you really carry around a giant mega knife like the Onslaught.

Not exactly. The Onslaught is a slicer, the thing FFG blade is designed to cut and nothing else. The ZT0400 has a thicker blade, and a reinforced tip. It's not the best slicer, but it works in a pinch.

Not even close to the ZT. ZT has S30V, better coating, just better materials in general. It's also assisted... and I'd trust their warranty over Entrek's.

But, I do not have any experience with the Entrek, just going by specs.

I've had a few ZT's in the past. They are GREAT knives and built like tanks. That being said I found myself leaving them at home due to weight and size (or should I say it feels big in the pocket). I don't think you have to worry about the quality of the knife, it just depends on what you are looking for.

I prefer a bigger carry blade, b/c that's what works for me. I've found the Spyderco Military gives me everything I want in a smaller feeling, lighter, thiner and plenty strong package. But if you like a beefy feeling heavier knife.. ZT's are excellent values in my opinion.

I haven't read the exact stats on the onslaught, I just held it at a gun show, but it was definitely my impression that it could handle anything. Of course, that was 5 months ago, so perhaps my memory fails me.

At any rate, I must disagree with the criticisms of the axis lock. I do think liner locks are underrated, particularly higher end ones like this, but an axis lock knife is both easier to open and close, wears less and in my experience more reliable.

If you don't mind the size difference, this one would be a hard decision. For me, the Onslaught is simply far too big to carry and you might as well have a fixed blade at that point. The upcoming mini-onslaught, well, that'll be a different matter altogether.

But...>I think I might order an 0400 today. I looked at it a lot when it first came out so maybe it's time.

Get the 0400 with confidence, you will be impressed. The F&F is awesome, very sharp out of the box, solid lock up, great all around.

well, I'm not sure if this will make any difference for you, but I just ordered a ZT0400 and I didn't order an Onslaught. So I'm pretty confident that it's the right one.

I think I'm going to go with the zt 0400.I'll see if I can take some pics of it when I get it.

Oddly enough, I was just about to write a review of it.

But, for our brief purposes, I love it. It's not my favorite knife ever, and I don't think it's a game changer, but it's unique enough to give you something special and not so weird that it's merely a niche tool. It doesn't hurt that it is arguably the best value in ZT's lineup, depending on whether you'd trade AO and S30V for G10 and tankness.

I have had four ZT folders, the 0200, 0302, 0400 and 0500. Oddly, I ended up loving the two that got the least attention, at least, from my viewpoint, the 0500 and the 0400. Anyway, I'll get a review up in the next 30 minutes and link you.

Lol, sorry, as is so often the case for my ilk at 1 AM, my work load suddenly increased so I think this review will have to wait until tomorrow.

I wish people would stop buying the crap Amazon sells and buy from a real knifeshop.
Crap from Amazon? Isn't the knife made by Zero Tolerance? As for who sells it, I've bought a few knives thru Amazon and they always originated from a US knifedealer. Amazon only facilitates the payments, AFAIC, which is good for me AND the dealer. I deal with a trusted party, and the dealer doesn't get the headaches that often go with Internet sales.

They are basically drop shippers. You won't ever get the same kind of love you would from a straight up knife dealer. You buy a knife and send it back for whatever reason, they will ship that same knife out to someone else, over and over again. I ordered a knife that came in looking like a user, I tried to get an exchange and the 2nd knife looked worse. The blade was scratched up, the lock would stick, and the very tip was broken off (2mm). Lots of other people have similar experiences.

my brother is US Customs; he uses a zt400 and he loves it...he's poking, prodding and cutting things all the time with it...i've seen it, and it's seen some heavy duty but edge-wise still nick free and sharp...

...and i've bought more than a few pieces of steel via amazon; i do look there first...got no issues buying thru them and will continue to do so as long as i can find what i want at the price i need...and when i can't then i'll go to a dealer...

My only experience with a tanto blade is with the 0400 and the tanto Groove. They never really struck me as tantoish due to their low tip angel and recurve belly. I found the design very useful. Though the 0400 was a great knife with a great build I traded it off and kept the Tanto Groove. I didn't need a knife that big and hefty, the Groove was more of a sliced which was what I was looking for. I would still call the Groove a hard use folder just not as bomb proof as the 0400.

I don't mind the size and weight..My edc is over 5oz.

It was more of a slicer vs heavy cutter issue really. I wanted a slicer. A Spyderco PPT sees most of the EDC time and it's no light weight. If you find yourself liking the blade shape I'd recommend picking up Tanto Groove. They are great EDCs and addictive flippers.
