Hey Forum Friends,
I just got the ZT 0452 and would like to get thumb studs installed on it. Does anyone know a company or person that would do that? I reached out to a couple knife modders on instagram but they all say it’s possible but don’t do it. Any info would help.

Thanks

Personally, I would not do it. That's hardened steel, and you'll create a big stress riser. And thumb studs would have to be put in just the right spot to make sure they work. Flippers are balanced for flipping, not thumb studs.

You could buy a clamp on thumb stud -- it's like a saddle that slips over the spine and is held in place by an allen screw -- to find the right spot. These are sold on Amazon and are cheap.

My advice would be to find a similar knife that already has a thumb stud.

That all makes sense. I bought one of those clamp on thumb studs for my American Blade Works Model 1 and it works great. My only complaint is it sits high up on the blade.

the problem with mods is no one will ever pay what you put into it. so if youre gonna keep it forever and it can be done well...doesnt matter. its your knife. if you ever change your mind and want to sell it off.....expect to take a big loss or it to not sell at all.......

looking at photos you would probably be stuck with that stud right at or overlapping the beginning of the swedge. There's not much blade height and the guard may hit it

I'd consider a thumb disc instead of a thumb stud due to the very limited space on the blade when closed. Take a look at ZT 0640 for reference. It would need to be put on top of the jimpings though.
That’s a good idea. I didn’t think of that. I did find a knife modder that will do it if there is room. I’m gonna pitch that idea.

Well I got one of the clamp on thumb studs. It works pretty good. About the same amount of force needed to open a Hinderer. I still think permanent thumbs studs would be possible.
