Hey guys,

I just purchased a ZT 301 and I have a desperate question for other ZT users. My ZT 301 does not have a disk for the frame lock mechanism.:(:( (I did check under the pocket clip) I have seen tons of review on it and all of which had that little "disk" on the back to prevent the frame lock from over bending. Is this a fake, lemon, or special edition? It would be really cool if someone has an idea :)

If you purchased from an authorized dealer it's probably fine (not a fake I mean) and if this is an issue Kai will absolutely repair/replace it no problem at all, great customer service. ;)

By the way cheers for asking a question and trying to get to the bottom of the issue before coming online just to bash the company right away, as some folks are wont to do.

It's real, they added in the stainless lockbar insert from several other models which has a built in over travel.

Thanks for the reply! just a side question: I noticed that one of the screws on the pocket clip came stripped as i was trying to switch to another carrying position. I do not know if it came this way or was it been messed around in the store previously. Could I get an exchange or some other form of warranty coverage?

I've needed screws a couple times. Just email the company with the model number and they'll send you the screws. There's a form on their website for replacement parts. Just select pocket clip/screws and give the model number of the knife, they'll send em out right away.

 KAI is definitely the best company I've dealt with when it comes to getting parts out.

If you're gonna do some tinkering you should invest in some Wiha torx screwdrivers. They will hold up well and not strip the screws.

JW09, over time, there can be many generations of a given model. The reason for the changes can vary. Sometimes it's for production reasons, other times it is for perceived improvements. In most cases it's more of a personal preference on which generation you like.

Would you call the replaceable hardened steel insert on the lockbar of the titanium framelock a perceived or an actual improvement?

I don't understand why you'd want to change something for "perceived improvements". Is it to go along with the latest wave/trend since customers perceive it as an "improvement"?

If you need the stripped screws taken out send it in to ZT: ZERO TOLERANCE WARRANTY INFORMATION.

Like others have mentioned use a quality Torx driver like Wiha. For ZT you need Torx bit #6, #8 and for larger knives #10.

I probably should have written that a tad better RamZar. The perception of improvements come from the elu's. As you know, preferences with generational changes will vary from user to user.

Personally, I like the stabilizer, although I've never come close to overextended any frame...

Personally, I like the replaceable hardened steel insert on the titanium lockbar to deal with stickiness (for ZT only had it on the 0560 series) and also eventually due to wear if it goes all the way over.

The removal of the LBS seems like a cost cutting measure. Don't see how it's an upgrade to lose a feature.

The LBS vs the steel puck...It's a wash for us. The 0300 series doesn't have a long life ahead of it, so it's kind of a moot point.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into picking one up for the collection. My 0551 blew my mind in terms of build quality. I imagine the 300 series will do the same.

I don't know if you can look at it that way. Its not like they only removed the LBS and said "oh look we upgraded it". They just replaced it with a different method, the steel lockbar insert. In all reality you didn't lose a feature but traded it for a percieved better one that does the same thing while also potentially cutting down on lock stickiness and such.
