i really like the looks of the ZT450CF but just saw a 2011 thread here ripping S35VN as a sub standard to S30V in edge holding and toughness. I'm much more about edge holding in preference to blade quality and would appreciate some advice on S35VN from experienced users, especially with ZT experience. Also thinking about an M390 Ritter. Any clear winner in holding a sharp edge? I'm not worried about ease of sharpening.

Thanks.

Frank

s30v and s35vn may as well be the same thing in use. One over the other should not decide which knife to buy. On paper, s35vn is a slight upgrade. Both of these excellent steels have some how become underrated as new exciting super steels emerge, but in many ways, they are still the benchmark.

M390 will have noticeably better edge retention than both of the above.

FWIW, I have the 0450 in s35vn and it takes a great edge and holds it very, very well. As does it's big brother...

Beautiful knives. Are those custom scales on the 0450? I thought all the carbon fiber knives were black blade.

Thanks for the reply.

In reality there's barely any difference, and I can tell you from using my 0452cf that ZT does it well. That thread bashing s35vn is probably all the CRK haters associating Chris Reeve's somewhat soft heat treat with what they think s35vn does on all knives.

I never had a problem with my 450 with edge rolling or retention compared to s30. I think s30 lost its ability to whittle hair faster than 35 actually. I miss my 450 as I traded it for a 940-1.

In every video and review I have ever done of ZT I have consistently said they do S35 better than anyone. I have beaten the snot out of my ZT0630 and never had a single problem. It is a great steel and the 450CF is an awesome knife. Buy one with confidence my friend!

Yes. I bought the custom CF a month before they announced the new one. However, I like the plan blade and love how it matches its buddy. The weight savings was noticeable.

Great trade! I carry my 940-1 far more than the 0450 (Mantra2 more than either), they all fit in the same use/carry for me.
