Zt 0350- life saving

ZOMG, she had a life-threatening sprained ankle??? And you guys had to carry this girl out on a stretcher???

I applaud you for being prepared for the situation (), but really, aren't you over-embellishimng the story just a wee bit? Also, you carry 30 pounds of gear just for a few miles of day hiking? To each their own, but that sounds like going way overboard.

I'm not familiar with the area he was hiking in but where i hike if you have someone with a bad sprained ankle you've either got to call search and rescue (and most likely get charged thousands of dollars) or you lug them down the mountain yourself. Ever tried to carry someone on your back down a rugged 3 miles of trail? I have and it's difficult enough to be called impossible. Some sort of stretcher is a necessity. And yes, if you get caught out without any cellphone reception and have to stay the night on the mountain it very well can be life-threatening. People die from exposure every year around here. 30 lbs of gear does seem excessive though :)

I totally get that, as I hunt/fish/backpack here in the Colorado mountains, but I've never seen a sprained ankle become a life-threatening injury only 3 miles up a trail when you have a group of people hiking together.

I have, however, carried a 110-120 pound woman down the last two miles of trail from Half Dome in Yosemite NP as the light was fading at the end of the day. She literally couldn't even stand up on her own due to severe dehydration and nearly had a heat stroke. (Labor Day tourist hiker; she was NOT prepared for the hike!) I'd say that's pretty rugged, and it most certainly was not easy. I get that not everyone could do that either, but I'm a 6'2" 250 pound horse. :o

Branches broken by hand would have worked as well for a short duration splint.

Camelback, extra clothes because it was raining etc
Etc

Adds
