ZT 0393glcf--Talk me out of it

BTW, there is a new Hinderer Eklipse showing up as we speak, with a Bowie grind (my favorite grind). Photo courtesy of SE (great shop !). Just saying :)

I did not know this one is coming. Is the blade shape identical to the one on XM-18 3.5" Bowie?

BUD K has folders starting at $6. Wouldn't you be happier with 46 of those instead of one of these? :D

Word.

For this kinda coin I could send him the whole jug of Jarbenzas from my hardware store AND a half box of good Elysian microbrews.

I swear folks just don't take the time to shop around that they should.

Looks like the same shape as the zt0392 Bowie, which is the same as the XM-18, except the missing choil. I'll confirm when it arrives :)

SE is the store, Southern Edges.

Not to discount the awesomeness of the new eklipse bowie, but I’d like to circle back to the original question. I have an XM-18, half track, 0393glcf, and 0562cf. There is a place for all of them, as I feel like they are differentiated enough from each other - and none of them are going anywhere. This is the wrong place for this topic lol. You’re pretty much only going to hear, “get it!” or, “how about you just give in and buy a $425 knife, stop messing around” from this group!

Get what makes you happy, if you like a knife go for it!!!!

I've been buying and selling for a while .... through all this time the only thing that matters is how much I like a certain knife .... some like the same as me some don't

Sounds like you actually want it, so why have us talk you out of it?

If you really are looking for reasons not to buy it, I'd suggest that some good reasons are that ZT doesn't seem to heat treat 20CV well and that that knife is not ground very well for cutting things.

I've got one. I dig it, big time...the CF is classy and doesn't glow 24/7 so it's not as huge a deal as some make it out to be. Hell, with the rolling blackouts going on a GITD knife might be right up your alley.

ZT has awesome quality and the action on my example is top notch. You can use the flipper and blade stops and the working finish makes you wanna put it to work right away.

Anyways, this thread needs more pics as always:

I had wondered about the steel..again being new to this i have tried to learn about various steels, but it now appears that even same steel from dlifferent makers can be different. Does the heat treatment potentially make the blade more fragile if incorrectly done? The cts204p on the 620cf was a bear to sharpen, but seems to holding its edge well. The 20cv on the 462 is even tougher to put the shaving edge on. But theres reports of zt's being fragile with that steel?

ZT has had a few instances in the past with subpar heat treats on some steels (elmax and s35vn), but the cases were few, and some overblown. Their 20cv is just fine, as is any other steel they use. I have them in s35 and 20cv with no problems at all, good edge retention and after reprofiling to 15dps they slice just fine.

Every manufacturer can have lemons here and there. Don't let it sway your decision on a ZT though, they are excellent and have great customer service if you do have a problem.

There does seem to be something about the blade shape that leads to the knife cutting well or even sharpening up easier. How does one go about reprofiling a blade?

When I say reprofiling I mean taking the edge bevel down in degrees. In the case of ZT and Kershaw, they tend to have more obtuse bevels (over 20 degrees per side). Reprofiling it to 15dps just takes time and a coarse stone. The resulting cutting ability and edge holding more than make up for the amount of steel removed.

I know my Hinderer xm-18 has benefitted greatly from being taken down from whatever obtuse angle it had from the factory down to 15dps. I've seen Hinderers as high as 24dps, which is almost 50 degrees inclusive. Even on a hard use knife that kind of angle is ridiculous imo!

So, wait, are we making fun of people that buy GitD knives? Is.. is that a thing?

Not really. OP said "talk me out of it" and someone joked that GitD knives are better suited to children and someone else missed that and took it seriously. Nobody is judging your love of things that glow in the dark, don't worry.
